MaccaTroll (also referred to as Maccatrols or Maccatroll) is a custom-built live electronics control system used in contemporary vocal performance. It was developed by Arnvid Karstad and Asle Karstad and is primarily used by the Norwegian vocal ensemble Trondheim Voices.
The system has been described in international media as a set of wearable electronic devices enabling performers to manipulate and transform their own vocal output during live performance.[1]
MaccaTroll consists of wireless, body-worn controller units operated by individual performers. Each unit allows real-time manipulation of vocal processing parameters, including delay, reverberation, pitch shifting, and looping.[2]
The system is designed for ensemble use, enabling each performer to independently process their own voice while contributing to a collective electronic sound field.[3]
The system emerged from experimental performance work involving Trondheim Voices in the mid-2010s. Early implementations of similar technology were used in theatre productions such as 100 hemmeligheter (2014), where reviews describe the use of specially built electronic sound devices for live vocal processing.[4]
