The MIST FPGA is an open source project and a hardware platform to recreate computers of the 1980s and 1990s using FPGA technology. The name is based on the Amiga and Atari ST (aMIga + ST), the first two computers the MIST aimed to recreate.
The project was started by Till Harbaum, who based his work on the previous MiniMIG project. Harbaum announced it publicly on a forum of Atari users in 2013.
The initial development of the Mist was documented in 2015 via a serie of articles in the German magazine in 2015 C't.[1]
Also surpassed in popularity by the MiSTer FPGA, the project is still active on GitHub, and new versions of the board are regularly produced.
MIST uses a custom build FPGA board with a microcontroller, and includes analog connectors like classic Atari style joystick connectors and VGA output.
Recreated platforms are configured by selecting a FPGA configuration file, or "core", which describes the target platform in a hardware description language (HDL). The board microcontroller then loads the core unto the FPGA on startup.
