MELOW (formerly MELUS-India) is an Indian academic society established in 1997 to promote the study of world literature, comparative literature, literary criticism, and cultural studies. The society organizes academic conferences, lectures, and scholarly events, and publishes the annual journal MEJO: The MELOW Journal. Its activities bring together researchers, teachers, and students working in literature and related disciplines.

History

MELOW was founded in 1997 as MELUS-India, the Indian chapter of the U.S.-based MELUS (Society for the Study of the Multi-Ethnic Literature of the United States). The organization initially focused on the study of multi-ethnic literatures of the United States, including African American, Native American, Hispanic, and other literary traditions.

In 2007, the organization adopted the name MELOW (The Society for the Study of the Multi-Ethnic Literatures of the World) to reflect a broader academic scope encompassing world literatures and comparative literary studies beyond the United States.

The society held its first annual conference in 1998 and has since organized regular international conferences on themes relating to literature, culture, identity, globalization, translation, and interdisciplinary humanities research.

Activities

MELOW organizes an annual international conference featuring keynote lectures, paper presentations, panel discussions, and invited lectures by scholars from India and abroad. The conferences examine themes in literary studies, comparative literature, postcolonial studies, cultural studies, translation studies, and related disciplines.

In addition to its annual conference, the society organizes regional academic events known as Mini-MELOW conferences and conducts an online discussion series titled MELOW Musings, which provides a forum for scholarly discussion on literary and cultural topics.

Publications

MELOW publishes MEJO: The MELOW Journal, an annual peer-reviewed journal that includes selected papers presented at its international conferences. Earlier conference proceedings were published in print, while recent volumes have been made available online.

The journal publishes research articles in literature, literary criticism, comparative literature, translation studies, cultural studies, and interdisciplinary humanities.

Isaac Sequeira Memorial Award

The society confers the Isaac Sequeira Memorial (ISM) Award during its annual conference in memory of Professor Isaac Sequeira. The award is presented to a young scholar for a paper selected from conference presentations.

The annual conference also includes the Isaac Sequeira Memorial Lecture, delivered by an invited scholar in the humanities.

Organization

MELOW is administered by a governing body consisting of elected office bearers and is supported by an international advisory board. The society's activities include the organization of academic events, publication of research, and collaboration with scholars and educational institutions.
