Luke Hsu (born 1990) is a violinist and composer. Born in Shanghai and raised in Houston, he is based in Berlin. His repertoire includes contemporary music as well as works from earlier periods.

Luke began studying the violin in Houston with Fredell Lack and Emanuel Borok.[1] At the age of sixteen, he made his debut with the Houston Symphony. He studied with Cho-Liang Lin at Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music, Donald Weilerstein at the New England Conservatory, and Rodney Friend at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He received honours and awards while attending these institutions.^[1]

His other teachers and mentors have included Vivian Hornik-Weilerstein, Kim Kashkashian, and Lucy Chapman. He has also studied with Pierre Amoyal at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.^[2]

Hsu participated in music programmes including IMS Prussia Cove and the Verbier Festival Academy. He also received a scholarship from the International Academy of Music in Liechtenstein and took part in its intensive music weeks.

Hsu has performed as a soloist at venues including Wigmore Hall, Windsor Castle, the Kennedy Center, the Herkulessaal, the Berlin Philharmonie, and BOZAR. He has appeared with orchestras including the Belgian National Orchestra, the Royal Chamber Orchestra of Wallonia, the Houston Symphony, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. He has performed under conductors including Leonard Slatkin, Nikolaj Znaider, Hugh Wolff, and Jean-Jacques Kantarow. A performance with the Victoria Symphony Orchestra was recorded and broadcast by NPR’s Performance Today. Other performances have been broadcast by Canada’s CBC and Denmark’s DR. He has also performed at events attended by Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, and Queen Mathilde of Belgium.^[3]

Hsu has performed chamber music with musicians including Itamar Golan, Cho-Liang Lin, Gil Shaham, Marc-André Hamelin, Peter Frankl, and Colin Carr. He has appeared at the Verbier Festival, La Jolla SummerFest, the Wieniawski Festival, Music@Menlo, Yellow Barn, the San Miguel de Allende Chamber Music Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, and the Tongyeong International Music Festival. He has also participated in Prussia Cove Open Chamber Music.^[4]

Hsu was a laureate of the Queen Elisabeth Competition.^[5] At the 10th Quadrennial International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, he received the Bronze Medal, the Bach Prize, and the Mozart Sonata Prize. He won first prize at the ISANGYUN Competition and received a special prize for a performance of Mozart at the Wieniawski Competition. He has also received prizes at the Nielsen, Wieniawski, Michael Hill, and Paganini competitions.^[6]

Hsu’s compositions have been performed at Jordan Hall and Brown Hall in Boston by musicians including Donald and Vivian Weilerstein. His works have also been presented in television broadcasts from Salzburg. He has given masterclasses at the Royal Academy of Music in London. He performs on a Gagliano violin made in 1781.^[7]
