Draft:Lorentz clock

A Lorentz clock is a hypothetical clock that proves the existence of time dilation. The clock is named after Dutch physicist Hendrik Lorentz.

A Lorentz clock exists of two parallel mirrors between which a photon is reflected. When the distance between the mirrors is 150.000 km or 93,206 miles.

When the clock is moved in a imaginary line parallel to the mirrors, the photons have to take a longer path. Noting that the speed of light is invariable, the clock is moving at a slower pace. The factor by which the clock runs slower is called the Lorentzfactor, represented by the letter gamma. This can be determined using the Pythagorean theorem and is:

According to the theory of relativity, any other clock moving at the same speed must also tick more slowly. Category:Theory of relativity Category:Hendrik Lorentz
