Lima Pride is an annual pride march in the city of Lima in honor of International LGBT Pride Day. The event started being held in 2002[1]. The date that the march occurs on has varied over time, although usually it occurs on the first day or the last Saturday of June. The march starts at the Campo de Marte and ends at the Plaza San Martín. At the end of the march there are speeches and an artistic performance.
At the end of the 1980s, the LGBT community of Peru was afraid of raids and police brutality, such as the raid on the lesbian bar La Ferretería in the Breña district of Lima and killings and kidnappings done as a method of 'social cleansing' by organizations such as MRTA and Sendero Luminoso. These actions resulted in massacres like the Aucayacu massacre and the Tarapoto massacre.
On June 1st, 1995, to commemorate International LGBT Pride Day and the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall riots, the Movimiento Homosexual de Lima, a nonprofit dedicated to defending the rights of LGBT people in Peru, organized what is considered the first demonstration for LGBT rights in Lima[2]. The demonstration was held in Kennedy Park in the Miraflores district. The goal of the demonstration was to protest abuse committed by the police against the LGBT community in the country. Some of the people attending covered their faces in order to avoid possible retaliation against them by their family or at work. Rallies following the demonstration were held in the Plaza Francía of the district of Lima, with more people joining. The rallies were supported by public figures such as the Vedette and congresswomen Suzy Días. [3][4][5][6]
