Stephen Lawrence Robless[1] (1901 or 1902 – 5 August 1974), also known under the religious name Brother Lawrence Henry, was a prominent educator who served as the principal of St. Joseph's Institution and the Saint Patrick's School in Singapore, the Director-General of the St. Joseph's Training College in Penang and as the founding Director of the St. Lasalle Higher Secondary School in Tuticorin.

Early life and education

Robless was born in the early 1900s.[2] He was the son of Mary Frances Robless of Penang, who was active with a number of the Catholic Associations there. He grew up with four brothers, including C. E. Robless, the Official Assistant to the Resident Councillor, and three sisters.[3] In 1916, he and 20 other Juniors of the Christian Brothers enrolled as the first batch of the newly established St Joseph's Novitiate on Pulau Tikus. He was among the first 18 to receive the Holy Habit there, alongside Brothers Casimir L'Angellier, Amedy Lyne and Austin de Lemos.[4]

Career

Robless was a teacher at the St. Joseph's Institution in Singapore by November 1935.[5]
