Krishan Chander Park (also known locally as Fountain Park) or Fawara garden, is a public park located in Poonch, Jammu and Kashmir, India. It is one of the principal urban parks of the town and serves as a recreational space for residents and visitors.[1]

The park is named after the renowned Urdu and Hindi writer Krishan Chander, who spent much of his childhood in Poonch. A statue of the writer along with a tomb of part of his ashes stands within the park.[2]

History

The site originated as a landscaped public garden during the Dogra period. According to The Tribune, it was designed on the pattern of the Shalimar Garden of Kashmir. The park was renovated by the municipal authorities in 1977 and was subsequently renamed Krishan Chander Park in memory of the celebrated writer.[3]

In 2005, the Indian Army renovated portions of the park under Operation Sadbhavana, including restoration of its fountains. In 2012, a youth club with facilities including a library, internet café, billiards and table tennis was established within the park premises.[4]

In 2026, a miniature tulip garden was inaugurated inside the park by district officials as part of horticultural development initiatives.[5]

Location

The park is situated in Poonch town near Shri Krishan Chander Government Degree College. It occupies a prominent location within the urban area and is easily accessible from the town centre.[6]

Features

Krishan Chander Park contains landscaped lawns, walking paths, ornamental fountains, mature trees and seating areas. It is used for leisure, morning and evening walks, and community gatherings.[7]

The park also houses a statue commemorating writer Krishan Chander.[8]

Cultural significance

The park commemorates the literary legacy of Krishan Chander (1914–1977), one of the leading Urdu and Hindi fiction writers of the twentieth century. Although born in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, he spent much of his childhood in Poonch, and the region frequently appeared in his writings.[9]
