Knockout Outdoor is an Electronic Dance Music festival held annually in Australia. Founded in 2019 by Harder Styles United, the festival primarily plays Hardstyle music, and music from associated sub-genres, such as Rawstyle, Happy hardcore, Hardcore and Uptempo. It is the largest hard dance festival in Australia and one of the largest in the world, attracting 60,000 visitors in the 2025 edition.[1]

After a single edition hosted at Melbourne's Flemington Racecourse in 2019[2], Knockout Outdoor has been hosted at Sydney Showground Stadium and the surrounding showgrounds since 2022.[3]



Event history

2010s - 2019: Pre Event History

Prior to Knockout Outdoor, the "Knockout" concept had been used in several different iterations throughout the years by HSU Events. Previous iterations include Knockout Circuz, and Knockout Games of Destiny, which took place at Sydney Showgrounds in 2018. The event was an indoor event and included 11 international artists.[4]

The 2018 Australian edition of Defqon.1 Festival (previously held at Sydney International Regatta Centre from 2009) attracted widespread media and political attention within New South Wales, as two visitors died and another eighteen were admitted to hospital following drug related issues. [5] Following this edition, and the introduction of new licensing regulations in early 2019, Sydney International Regatta Centre said they would not support the hosting of another edition, causing Q-Dance to abandon the event entirely.[6] Following this, there remained no large outdoor harder-styles dance festival in Australia.

2019-2022: First Editions

In August 2019, Harder Styles United subsequently announced the first edition of Knockout Outdoor to be held at Flemington Racecourse on the 7th of December, 2019. The event was allegedly planned to take place in Sydney, but following changes to licensing laws relating to "high-risk" festivals in March[7], HSU events chose to host Knockout in Melbourne instead.[8]

The first edition hosted 3 stages (Heart for Mainstage acts, Soul for Rawstyle & Hardcore and Unity for Happy hardcore).[2] No 2020 or 2021 editions occurred due to the COVID-19 lockdowns in Australia, with the next edition of Knockout Outdoor announced in May of 2022, scheduled for the first day of NSW's Labour Day long weekend.[3]

From 2022 onwards, the event has been held at Sydney Showgrounds, in the same Olympic Park precinct as many other popular events. Since it falls on the same long weekend as the NRL Grand Final, held in the neighbouring Stadium Australia, rugby league players staying in nearby hotels have complained of the loud noise from the festival preventing them from sleeping the night before game day.[9]

2023-Present: Continued Popularity

For the 2023 edition, Electronic dance music duo Showtek were announced as headline artists, marking their first exclusive hardstyle performance in a number of years.[10] Each edition, the lineup hosts more than 40 artists from around the world, with reputable names in harder styles music such as Brennan Heart, Headhunterz, Darren Styles, Angerfist and D-Block and S-Te-Fan all making appearances in various editions.

Due to the event's popularity, tickets can be difficult to access through official channels, with some turning to purchasing tickets from those engaging in ticket "scalping" on social media. In 2025, a 20-year-old man was charged with fraud after reportedly imitating an official event promoter on social media, allegedly selling over 100 fake tickets to the event.[11]

Drug use & policing

The Australian Hardstyle scene has long been associated with illicit drug consumption, with distribution and possession of many party drugs prohibited under Australian law (see: Illicit drug use in Australia). The cancellation of Australia's previous outdoor hardstyle event; Defqon.1 Festival; was attributed to a spate of drug related medical incidents and two deaths linked to drug overdose.[12]

Current events in the scene, including Knockout Outdoor, are heavily patrolled by police, whom are funded not exclusively via the taxpayer, but through a user-pays policing model.[13] For the 2023 edition, Harder Styles United was charged close to $120,000 for the attendance of New South Wales Police Force members.[14] NSW Police often bring drug detection dogs to conduct randomised checks on patrons.[15] In 2023, one in four people flagged by NSW Police drug detection dogs were found to have illicit substances on them.[16]

Australian media reported following the 2023 edition that two attendees had died in suspected overdoses linked to the festival.[15]

In 2025, Knockout Outdoor was selected as one of twelve festivals participating in the NSW government's pill testing trial, where several music events were permitted to trial pill testing in an attempt to mitigate drug-related harms. Data from pill testing at another Australian hardstyle event in 2025 found that MDMA and Cocaine were the most commonly used substances amongst attendees.[17]
