Joe Hurley

Joe Hurley (born June 24, 1978), nicknamed "Kid Wolverine"/ "The Irishman", is an American retired professional mixed martial artist. Associated with the renowned Lion's Den team and fighting out of Walnut Creek, California, Hurley competed primarily in the lightweight and welterweight divisions during the late 1990s and 2000s.

Hurley compiled a professional record of 12 wins and 5 losses. Known primarily for his submission-fighting background, a significant portion of his career victories came by way of submission or knockout. Over the course of his career, he competed in notable organizations such as World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC), World Fighting Alliance (WFA), and King of the Cage (KOTC), squaring off against high-profile opponents including future MMA stars Nick Diaz, Nate Diaz, and Vitor Ribeiro, as well as veteran Yves Edwards.

Hurley's career is notably intertwined with the early trajectories of both Diaz brothers, having faced each sibling under the World Extreme Cagefighting (WEC) banner during their respective rises in the sport. On March 27, 2003, at WEC 6, he challenged Nick Diaz for the inaugural WEC Welterweight Championship, losing via first-round kimura. Three years later, at WEC 21 on June 15, 2006, Hurley squared off against the younger brother, Nate Diaz, once again falling by submission after being caught in a second-round triangle choke.
