Jimmy Thompson is an American football coach currently for the Los Angeles Chargers of the National Football League(NFL). He previously spent five seasons at Vanderbilt University (2021–2025), where he coached the Stars/Nickels group. Thompson has 7 years of coaching experience, primarily at the collegiate level, including stops at LSU and Notre Dame, prior to Vanderbilt.

Playing Career

Thompson played at the University of Notre Dame from 2015-2018, including as a member of Notre Dame’s first College Football Playoff team in 2018. He earned his Bachelor’s in Business, and later received his masters from Vanderbilt University in Liberal Arts & Science.^[1]

Career

Thompson joined the Notre Dame staff immediately following his playing career in 2019, working under Brian Kelly and Defensive Coordinator Clark Lea.

Thompson was a Quality Control at LSU in 2020, serving under former Head Coach Ed Orgeron and Defensive Coordinator Bo Pelini.^[2]

Thompson left LSU to join Vanderbilt as a Graduate Assistant in 2021 under his college position coach Clark Lea and Defensive Coordinator Jesse Minter. Following the 2021 season, Thompson was promoted Stars/Nickels Coach.^[3]

Following 2025 season, Thompson departed Vanderbilt to join the Los Angeles Chargers & new Defensive Coordinator Chris O’Leary.^[4]

Personal Life

Thompson is originally from Hinsdale, IL and attended Hinsdale Central HS where he was a member of the football & basketball teams.^[5]
