Jessica Louise Venner (born 19 July 1992) is an English historian and author specialising in Ancient Rome and Pompeii. She is a Trustee of the Herculaneum Society[1] and an Associate Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.[2] She is currently a fellow of St. Johns College, Oxford and a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Oxford.[3]

Venner is the founder of Life in the Past Lane, under which she produces history content across TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, and also writes a regular blog on Substack.[4] She has been a frequent guest across numerous podcasts, where she has shared her academic opinion of a later date of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius which has led to her to become a public face of the debate.[5]

Early Life and Education

Jess Venner, was born on 19 July 1992 in Barking, East London, England.[6]

Venner was educated at Hainault Forest High School. She writes in her 2026 book that her school was underfunded and was unable to study classics, leading her initially into a career in marketing.[7]

At 18 she attended the University of the Arts London, receiving a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Magazine Publishing.

In 2016 she graduated from Birkbeck, University of London with a Master of Arts (MA) in Classical Civilisation.[8]

In 2018, Venner was awarded a scholarship from the AHRC-Midlands3Cities Doctoral Training Programme to pursue a PhD in Classics, Ancient History, and Archaeology at the University of Birmingham.[8] She completed it in 2022 with a doctoral thesis titled Hortus ager pauperis erat: Subsistence and commercial food productions in the urban gardens of first century AD Pompeii.[9]

Since 2026, Venner has been a Leverhulme Early Career Fellow at the University of Oxford.[3]

Career

Between 2022 and 2025, Venner worked in rare book selling before leaving to complete her manuscript.

In 2024, Venner started her instagram account creating historical content about Pompeii and ancient historical content. As of August 2026, she had over 350,000 followers across social media, with the handle @lifeinthepastlane_.

In 2026 Venner published her first book The Lost Voices of Pompeii: The Final Day in Seven Lives, recreating the final twenty-four hours before the eruption through the lives of seven people. The book received a review in the Times, and was notable for its use critical fabulation. It was launched on April 23, 2026, followed by a UK wide book tour.
