Jeffrey A. Baker (born September 13, 1963) is an American educator, athletic coach, and author specializing in physical education. He is best known for his long-term tenure within the Huber Heights City School District and his published research on the Sport Education Model.
Early Life and Education
Baker was born in Dayton, Ohio. He attended Denison University in Granville, Ohio, where he competed on the varsity track and cross country teams. He graduated in 1986 with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education. During his undergraduate years, he also served on the Sports Information staff and as the Assistant Intramural/Recreation Director.
He later attended the University of Dayton, earning a Master of Science in Physical Education in 2000. He maintained a 4.0 GPA, focusing his graduate research on event management, secondary physical education revitalization, and the Sport Education Teaching Model.
Career
Teaching
Baker’s teaching career spanned over three decades, primarily within the Huber Heights City School District (1992–2023). During his tenure, he served in several leadership capacities, including:
• District Physical Education Department Chairperson
• High School Physical Education Department Chairperson
• Participant in the 2011 Ohio Department of Education (ODE) Physical Education Pilot Program.
Throughout the early 2000s, Baker was recognized multiple times in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers for his work at Valley Forge Elementary and Studebaker Middle School. Prior to his time in Huber Heights, he taught at Lake Ridge Academy (1989–1991), where he also served as Assistant Athletic Director.
Coaching
Baker has an extensive background in track and field and cross country coaching at both the collegiate and K-12 levels. Notable achievements include:
• Huber Heights City Schools: Assisted the Boys Varsity Track & Field team to a third-place finish at the 2007 OHSAA State championships and a Regional Championship.
• Oakwood City Schools: Served as Head Girls Varsity Cross Country coach, leading the team to a District Runner-Up finish in 1997.
• Kettering Striders Track Club: Coached six National Age Group Champions.
Other Ventures
Outside of academia, Baker served as a Loan Officer for First National Bank in Dayton (1986–1989) and worked in event management for the City of Kettering at the Fraze Pavilion (2009–2012), where he oversaw large-scale staff operations and food service logistics.
Published Works and Presentations
Baker is a proponent of Siedentop’s Sport Education Model, a curriculum designed to provide students with authentic sport experiences. He has co-authored several articles in Future Focus, the journal for the Ohio Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (OAHPERD).
