Javier Botía (born 1972) is a Spanish mentalist, writer and broadcaster. At the 2018 world championship of magic organised by the Fédération Internationale des Sociétés Magiques (FISM) in Busan, South Korea, he won first prize in the mentalism category and the special prize for magical invention.[1][2]

Career

Radio and television

Botía began working in radio at the age of seventeen and went on to work in television as a presenter and comedian.[3] An anxiety disorder brought that career to an end; in a 2026 interview he described the symptoms he experienced in front of the microphone: "I would stand in front of the microphone, start sweating, get heart palpitations, and there was no reason for it."[3]

Turn to mentalism

Mentalism reached him first as a hobby, by way of stage illusion. His interest in the psychological mechanisms behind it — perception, suggestion and body language — helped him recover from that crisis and became his profession.[3][4] He won the Spanish championship in the discipline in 2016.[2]

FISM 2018

In July 2018, at the 26th FISM world congress of magic in Busan, Botía won the first world prize for mentalism together with the world prize for magical invention.[1] He stated at the time that he was the first Spaniard to win in the discipline.[2] His competition act consisted of identifying, without contact or questions, which colour each of five spectators brought on stage had chosen and hidden.[2]

Later work

In 2020 he appeared on the American television programme Penn & Teller: Fool Us, in the seventh-season episode "Watermelon Surgery".[5]

In 2026 it was announced that he would receive the Mandrake d'Or in France.[3] The same year he toured with the show Inteligencia Natural, performing in Peru for the first time.[6]

Book

  • Inteligencia Natural. Descubre tu poder mental (Córdoba: Arcopress, 2026). ISBN 978-84-10354-73-9.[7]

The book presents ideas from neuroscience and human behaviour for a general readership.[8]
