Induction abortion, also known as labor induction abortion or induction termination, is a method of induced abortion in the second or third trimester of pregnancy in which drugs are used to induce labor and expel the fetus and placenta from the uterus.[1][2] In contrast to induction of labor for childbirth, the intended outcome of labor induction abortion is fetal demise rather than neonatal survival.[3][4] In order to accomplish fetal demise, a feticidal injection may be administered into the fetus or amniotic fluid to cause fetal asystole (severe cardiac arrest).[4][5]
Labor induction abortion is usually distinguished from dilation and evacuation (D&E), a procedural abortion method in which the cervix is dilated and the fetus and placenta are dismembered and removed instrumentally.[6] After fetal demise is confirmed or omitted, modern induction abortion commonly uses mifepristone followed by repeated doses of misoprostol, or misoprostol alone where mifepristone is unavailable.[2][7][1]
Medication abortion affects expulsion of the fetus and placenta from the uterus without instrumentation.

Feticide is a procedure that induces irreversible asystole of the fetal heart.
