Hissyfit was a band from London, formed in 1993, after the members met at an early Riot Grrrl London meeting which was also attended by members of Linus. Several members of Hissyfit were producing riot grrrl fanzines and the band was originally formed to play a one-off gig.

History

The group's name was given to them by Jennifer Denitto, bass player of Linus at an early London Riot Grrrl meeting, and their first gig was at the Girlygig club night organised by Jen from Linus in 1993. Tiziana Stupia joined to sing a cover of Black Flag’s “Rise Above”.

That gig also featured the debuts of Sister George and Skinned Teen.

Drummer Suzie had met filmmaker Lucy Thane via her fanzine Stinkzine and introduced her to Sister George who rehearsed at the same East London rehearsal space. Lucy was in the early stages of planning her documentary It Changed My Life: Bikini Kill In The UK.

During the band’s short, sporadic timescale, they played numerous gigs with their friends Sister George, Linus,[1] Butterfingers, Comet Gain and Pussycat Trash.

The band broke-up in 1994, and Bethan now lives in Canada, Becky in New Zealand, and Suzie in London. Ruth's wearabouts are unknown. Tiziana founded Misanthropy Records in 1994 (in the house she shared with Suzie) and now resides in Germany.

Copies of Suzie’s Stinkzine fanzine are held in the archives of V&A National Art Library, Glasgow Women’s Library and University of the Arts London (UAL) and featured in the V&A Unboxing '90s subculture zines video.[2]
