Hiro Iida (Hirofumi Iida) is an electronic music designer. Iida uses synthesizers to design sound for musicals and artists' performances. Iida creates and programs sound of missing instruments among music performers, also delivers enveronmental sound and interpretes emotions into sound effects. Iida is a member of advisors board for Bob Moog Foundation.
Iida is from Musashino-city, Tokyo, Japan. In 1985, Iida studied under David Mash at Barklee College of Music in Boston. In 1989, Iida received Bachelor of Music in Electronic Production and Design. Immediate after Iida's graduation, he became a professor at Barklee until 1997. Iida moved to New York and started to work as an independent music designer.
Iida composed, arranged, and recorded work for both Japanese and American artists, as well as for corporate advertisements. Notable collaborations include Akiko Yano, PONTA BOX, Choro Club, Yoshikazu Mera, and Eijiro Nakagawa. From 1999 to 2012, he composed music and served as music director for fashion designer Chado Ralph Rucci’s shows during New York Fashion Week. Between 2005 and 2008, he worked with WWE (World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc.) on composition and sound design.[1]
In 2008, Iida met Billy Jay Stein, who became his business partner at Strange Cranium Productions, Inc., and became the head of electronic music designers. Their first work together was for the Broadway production Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. Iida subsequently shifted his focus to musical theater. Iida has contributed to musicals on Broadway in New York as well as in Japan, South Korea, London’s West End, Germany, and Australia.
