Future Associate is an Australian visual effects (VFX) company founded in 2018 and based in Marrickville, Sydney, New South Wales. The studio provides visual effects for film and television productions for Australian and international clients. Future Associate is a member of Ausfilm, the peak industry body promoting Australia as a destination for international screen production, and holds TPN Gold Certification, a content security standard required by major Hollywood studios for VFX vendors handling sensitive digital assets.[1]
Future Associate was founded in 2018 by visual effects supervisor Lindsay Adams, who had previously worked at major international VFX studios including Industrial Light & Magic, Weta Digital, MPC, Animal Logic, and Rising Sun Pictures.[2] Adams's credits prior to founding Future Associate include Mad Max: Fury Road, The Avengers, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1, and Happy Feet.[2] Adams received a Visual Effects Society Award nomination for Outstanding Compositing in a Photoreal Feature for Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) at the 14th Annual VES Awards.[3]
The studio was established after Adams was offered the opportunity to work on the pilot for the HBO series Watchmen, work his then-employer declined to take on. Adams left his position to pursue the project independently, returning to Sydney to assemble a crew for the production.[4] The studio quickly grew to 20 staff members, prompting a move to a larger facility in Marrickville.[4] In late 2024, Adams purchased a former smash-repairs workshop in Marrickville and rebuilt it as a purpose-built, 750-square-metre production facility designed around TPN Gold content-security requirements from the outset, including on-site render and storage infrastructure and solar power with battery backup.[5] Discussing the early growth of the studio, Adams noted the closure of Method Studios Sydney — which laid off approximately 200 staff — as a factor that increased the local talent pool available to the new company.[4]
Future Associate specialises in computer-generated imagery (CGI) including CG environments, character animation, digital doubles, creature effects, crowd simulations, and fire and water simulations.[1] The studio has contributed to more than 100 feature films and streaming series as of 2024.[1] Future Associate is a member of Ausfilm and holds TPN Gold Certification, a cybersecurity and content security standard for companies working with major studio content.[1]
