Fstoppers is an American photography website and online community that publishes industry news, equipment reviews, tutorials, and behind-the-scenes videos about photography and videography. It was founded in February 2010 by wedding photographers Lee Morris and Patrick Hall in Charleston, South Carolina.[1][2]

History

Morris and Hall launched Fstoppers in February 2010 as a site centered on behind-the-scenes videos showing how professional photographs are made. Within six months of launch, the site drew approximately 100,000 readers per month.[1]

In July 2010, the site attracted attention for a fashion photography shoot Morris produced using only an iPhone 3GS, intended to demonstrate that lighting and technique matter more than camera equipment. The accompanying video was viewed more than one million times in its first month and was covered by NPR's photography blog and MacRumors.[1][3][4]

In August 2014, a portrait series by Hall photographing volunteers at the moment they were shocked with a stun gun, published on Fstoppers, received coverage from The Post and Courier, ABC-owned television stations, and Designboom, and was featured in a CNN segment by Jeanne Moos.[5][6][7][8]

In December 2015, Hall photographed gun owners at a Charleston-area firing range on the day after Christmas for a portrait series published on the site; Hall discussed the project in an interview with Fox News.[9][10]

Tutorial business

Alongside its editorial content, Fstoppers produces and sells long-form video tutorials with professional photographers, including the Photographing the World landscape and travel photography series with Elia Locardi.[11][2]

In March 2018, in response to piracy of its tutorials, the company uploaded a fake 25-gigabyte version of Photographing the World 3 to The Pirate Bay. The hoax file, shot at an Olive Garden restaurant in Charleston, mimicked the real tutorial's opening before revealing itself as a parody; it became the most-downloaded torrent of the series. The stunt was covered by TorrentFreak and Techdirt.[12][13]

Reporting

In August 2020, an Fstoppers article by writer Andy Day reported that the online archive of the photo agency Magnum Photos included images that appeared to depict the sexual exploitation of minors. The report, amplified on social media, led Magnum to suspend sales from its archive and announce a comprehensive review of its collection; the episode was covered by The Guardian, The Art Newspaper, and Artforum, and examined at length by the Columbia Journalism Review and Artnet News, the latter describing Fstoppers as the website that brought the images to public attention.[14][15][16][17][18] The site's analyses have also been used by fact-checking organizations; a 2020 USA Today fact check of a purported 1898 tornado photograph drew on a 2015 Fstoppers examination of the image.[19]
