Food Huggers is an American kitchenware company founded in 2013 by Adrienne McNicholas and Michelle Ivankovic. The company designs and manufactures reusable silicone covers for storing cut fruits and vegetables, intended as a plastic-free alternative to plastic wrap and single-use plastic bags. Food Huggers is a Certified B Corporation and a women-owned business headquartered in Houston, Texas.

History

Founding and Kickstarter Campaign

Food Huggers was founded in 2013 by designers Adrienne McNicholas and Michelle Ivankovic, who developed the concept for a reusable silicone cover that could wrap around the cut face of a piece of fruit or vegetable to preserve freshness without plastic wrap.[1]

The founders described their design philosophy as targeting the precise point where a fruit or vegetable's natural protective skin had been cut away. "The eureka moment was when we realized that fruits and vegetables come with their own protective covers — their skins," McNicholas explained. "The most targeted solution to the problem of keeping them as fresh as possible was to address the area where the skin had been cut away."[2]

The company launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign on June 13, 2013. The campaign raised $183,497 against a goal of $26,000, representing approximately seven times the original funding target.[3]

In March 2014, Food Huggers entered a distribution agreement with Lifetime Brands, a major kitchenware distributor, expanding the product's retail availability across North America.[4]

In 2018, Food Huggers was featured in a dedicated segment on The Henry Ford's Innovation Nation, a CBS television program hosted by Mo Rocca. The Season 4, Episode 16 segment was titled "Food Huggers" and focused on the company's founding story and product design.[5]
