Feng Cha is an American boba tea and dessert chain founded in 2017 in Richardson, Texas. As of 2026, the company operates more than 80 locations, almost entirely through franchising, primarily concentrated in Texas.[1][2]
History
Feng Cha was founded in December 2017 by Johnny Gao and Yan Chen, a couple who met at the State University of New York at Buffalo and had frequented boba tea shops together before opening their first location in Richardson, Texas.[1][2] The company is headquartered in Richardson, Texas.[1]
By 2026, the chain had grown to 87 units, with expansion driven largely by multi-unit franchise agreements; earlier franchise deals were typically single-unit, but the company began attracting larger multi-unit operators, including a five-unit agreement covering Waco and Dallas–Fort Worth signed with a group of Denny's franchisees.[1][3]
The chain expanded outside Texas into college-town markets, including a location near Michigan State University in Lansing, Michigan, which opened in 2022.[4]
The chain has experienced at least one closure, in Las Vegas, Nevada.[1] Feng Cha operates 87 locations, primarily in Texas, in a boba tea market that includes larger chains such as Gong Cha (approximately 240 U.S. units), Kung Fu Tea (350+), and Sharetea (approximately 200), as well as international entrants Mixue and Chagee.[1]
Products
Feng Cha's menu centers on customizable milk teas and boba drinks, with options for sweetness, ice level, and toppings such as basil seeds and boba pearls. The chain has expanded beyond tea into dirty sodas, matcha drinks, coffee, and fruit drinks.[1] A signature item is the milk foam cake, an individual sponge cake topped with flavored milk foam.[1][5]
Reception
Reviewing the chain's Richardson, Texas location for the Dallas Observer, writer Danielle Beller praised the milk foam cakes — including a matcha version topped with Pocky sticks and a strawberry version she compared favorably to strawberry shortcake — as well as the customizable tea menu and the shop's interior design.[5]
