Fahad Samar is an Indian filmmaker, author, columnist, and actor.

Early life and education

Fahad Samar was born in 1968 and studied at Bombay International School in Mumbai, India. He graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree in English Literature in May 1990.[1]

Career

Film and television

Samar began his film career with Merchant Ivory Productions, working on films such as The Perfect Murder, The Deceivers and In Custody.[2]

Over his career in broadcasting, Samar has written, directed, and produced commercials, television shows, and documentaries under his production company, Bombay Talkie. His productions include documentaries on the Ganges and Narmada rivers. He produced and directed the television countdown show BPL OYE for Channel V and directed 110 episodes of the television program Superhit Muqabla. He also produced India’s first animated television show, Startoon Top Ten, for Star Plus, and co-directed the film Jannat Talkies. Samar formerly served as the Consultant Head of Programming at Entertainment Television Network (ETC).[1][2]

As an actor, Samar appeared as Viju Patel in two seasons of the Amazon Prime Video series Four More Shots Please!.[3] He was also cast in the Yash Raj Films production The Great Indian Family, directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya.[4]

Writing and journalism

Samar has authored two novels published by HarperCollins India: Scandal Point (2013) and Flash Point (2015).[5]

As a columnist and social commentator, he has contributed to publications such as the Mumbai Mirror, DNA, Bombay Times, and The Indian Express, where he wrote a national column titled "Samar of Discontent."[6] He has also written about food, wine, and travel for UpperCrust magazine under the column "Chow Bella,"[7] and his essays have appeared in Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Vogue, and Condé Nast Traveller. He has served as a jury member for the Condé Nast Traveller Best Restaurant of India Awards.[8]

Film criticism

Samar is a member of the Film Critics Guild. He has hosted the film review show Friday Double Bill on NDTV Prime and Filmology with Fahad Samar on Radio One 94.3 FM.[1]

Personal life

Samar lives in Mumbai with his wife, television and film actress Simone Singh.[2]
