Exposure Lights is a British manufacturer of LED lights for cycling, marine and automotive applications, based in West Sussex, England. It is a brand of Ultimate Sports Engineering Ltd (USE), which operates several brands under the USE Group umbrella.[1][2]
Ultimate Sports Engineering Ltd was founded by Roger Sparrow in West Sussex in 1990. The company's first product was a bicycle suspension seatpost, branded the USE Shokpost, and the production of bicycle components continues under the USE brand.[1]
The Exposure Lights brand was established in 2004 and launched its first products, the Race and Enduro mountain bike lights, in 2005. According to Cycling Industry News, the brand originated from 24-hour cross-country mountain bike racing, after the founders found existing lighting products inadequate.[1]
The company designs and manufactures its products at its facility in West Sussex, with aluminium light bodies CNC-machined on site from 6063 alloy. Exposure Lights holds Made in Britain accreditation.[2][3]
In 2010, the company introduced its patented Reflex technology, which uses accelerometers, gyroscopes and thermistors to adjust a light's output according to speed and terrain.[4][5] The technology was initially exclusive to a single model before being incorporated across the handlebar-mounted range.
In 2012, the company launched Exposure Marine, a sister brand producing spotlights, search lights and head torches for maritime use.[6] In 2020, Cycling Industry News reported that, at its 30th anniversary, the company was operating at peak production.[1]
In 2022, Exposure Lights established an Automotive Division, initially producing lights for rallying applications. The Radavist reported that the company was also supplying LED lighting assemblies for Tuthill Porsche vehicles.[2]
In 2014, Exposure Marine's MOB (man overboard) search light won the Life Saving and Safety Equipment category at the DAME Design Awards at the METSTRADE trade show. The product was selected from 116 entries from 23 nations.[7][8]
In September 2017, Scottish cyclist Mark Beaumont set a Guinness World Record for cycling around the world, completing the 18,000-mile route in 78 days, 14 hours and 40 minutes, beating the previous record by 44 days. Beaumont used Exposure Lights products for the extended periods of night riding required by his schedule of approximately 240 miles per day.[9][10][11]
In the 2017–2018 Volvo Ocean Race, Exposure Lights was the technical lighting supplier to the Dongfeng Race Team, which won the overall event, and the Turn the Tide on Plastic campaign.[12][13]
Cycling publications have noted the build quality associated with the brand's in-house CNC machining. The Radavist described the machined aluminium construction as contributing to the products' durability.[14] Bikerumor described the Six Pack and Zenith models as "arguably the best on the market", while Cyclingnews called the Race model "the pinnacle of gravel lighting options".[15][16]
Reviewers have consistently noted that Exposure Lights products are priced at the higher end of the market. MBR stated that while the products are expensive, they represent a worthwhile investment given the quality of illumination, technology and serviceability.[17] Multiple publications have highlighted the company's repair and servicing programme as a distinguishing factor.[18]
