Exotec (/eɡ.zo.tɛk/) is a global robotics company that develops warehouse automation systems combining autonomous mobile robots and software. Founded in 2015 by engineers Renaud Heitz and Romain Moulin, the company gained early attention for its Skypod goods-to-person system and its first large deployment with French e-retailer Cdiscount in 2017.[1][2] Exotec was selected for the French government's Next40 index in 2021.[3]
History
The company was created in 2015 in Lille, France.[4] In the first year, the founders raised 340,000 euros from angel investors to support the initial design and development of the Skypod system.
On December 1st 2016, Exotec announced a $3.3 million series A funding[5] round led by 360 Capital Partners and Breega Capital.
In early 2017 the first customer, Cdiscount,[6] deployed Exotec’s Skypod system in their Bordeaux warehouse. The initial system consisted of seven robots which moved both horizontally and vertically to store and retrieve orders from warehouse racks. In November 2018, Cdiscount and Exotec received the David Avec Goliath prize for their collaboration, an award from Raise and Bain & Company. [7]
In June 2018, the company announced their Series B round, raising $15M[8] and led by Iris Capital, 360 Capital Partners, and Breega.
Between 2019 and 2021, the company expanded its international presence, opening offices Japan[9], the United States[10], and in Germany.
In September 2020, the raised a $90 million Series C round[11], led by 83North. Two years later, the company raised a $335 million Series D round[12], becoming France’s first industrial unicorn. Later that year, the company was named to CNBC’s Disruptor 50 List[13].
Technology
Exotec’s technology is a goods-to-person automated storage and retrieval system (AS/RS) called the Skypod system. The system consists of mobile robots who can move both horizontally and vertically, powered by software called Deepsky[14], to move inventory from storage racks to operators at workstations.
On February 6, 2026, Exotec announced the commercial launch of the Next Generation of Skypod system[15]. The new generation comes with several design improvements, including a new and more compact Skypod robot, a workstation for robot-to-robot picking, high-throughput Exchanger, and denser storage.
The company has over 20 Next Gen projects worldwide, totaling $400M to customers, including Oxford Industries (Tommy Bahama, Lilly Pulitzer, Southern Tide, etc.), Grainger, and E.Leclerc.
Selected deployments
- Cdiscount – First large-scale commercial deployment in 2017 at the company’s Bordeaux/Cestas fulfillment center.[2]
- Fast Retailing (Uniqlo) – In 2019, Uniqlo’s parent company announced partnerships with two robotics startups, including Exotec, to automate warehouse operations.[16][17]
- Gap Inc. – Adoption of the Skypod system for returns processing in North America.[18]
- Carrefour, Decathlon – Exotec systems deployed in retail and e-commerce distribution centers.[19]
