Gelsenkirchen-Erle is located north of the Rhine–Herne Canal and the Emscher. To the southeast it borders directly on the forest area of the Resser Mark. The district is divided into the localities of Erle, Berger Feld and Middelich. Several streams flow through the area, such as the Leither Mühlenbach and the Knabenbach.

The district is surrounded exclusively by other districts of Gelsenkirchen. To the west it borders on Beckhausen, to the northwest on Buer, to the northeast on Resse and to the east on Resser Mark. Together with Resse and Resser Mark, Erle forms the eastern borough of Gelsenkirchen. All these districts were historically part of the former city of Buer. The Resser Mark formerly belonged to the rural outskirts of the village of Erle. To the south, Erle borders on Bismarck and, further west, on Schalke-Nord, both beyond the Emscher.

In the Middle Ages, from around 1230, large parts of the farming communities southeast of Buer on what is now Erle territory were managed from the fortified manor Haus Leythe. The Graf Bismarck colliery later acquired large parts of this land and began coal mining in 1894 at Shaft 3 near the estate. After the early closure of the mine in the 1960s, green spaces were created. Most of the shafts and the main administration of this important colliery were located in Erle. Near Shaft 3/5, the Schievenfeld-Siedlung was built between 1912 and 1914.

A small air-raid shelter from World War II has been preserved on Cranger Straße near the hospital.
