Erach Bharucha | |
|---|---|
| Occupations | Environmental educator, conservationist, author, surgeon |
Erach Bharucha is an Indian environmental educator, conservationist, author and former surgeon. His work has focused on environmental education, biodiversity conservation, sustainability studies and public policy in India. He chaired the committee appointed by the Ministry of Environment and Forests to examine environmental education in schools and later headed the University Grants Commission (UGC) committee that developed the national core curriculum for undergraduate environmental studies.[1][2]
Bharucha served as Director of the Bharati Vidyapeeth Institute of Environment Education and Research (BVIEER) in Pune. His work has included environmental education, biodiversity conservation, sustainability research, public health research and service on advisory bodies concerned with environmental policy and wildlife conservation.[3][4]
Bharucha developed an interest in wildlife and natural history at an early age. His interest in conservation was influenced by Indian ornithologist Salim Ali, whose work shaped his understanding of biodiversity and environmental conservation.[5]
He studied medicine and trained as a surgeon before pursuing a parallel career in environmental education and conservation.[6]
Before devoting much of his career to environmental education and conservation, Bharucha worked as a surgeon, surgery teacher and hospital administrator. Throughout this period, he remained involved in wildlife conservation and environmental initiatives alongside his medical profession.[7]
His medical background later informed his work on public health, environmental management and sustainability. He subsequently contributed to interdisciplinary research on disease surveillance, urban health systems and environmental health through peer-reviewed publications.[8][9]
Bharucha is associated with the development of environmental education in India through his work in higher education, curriculum development and public policy. As Director of the Bharati Vidyapeeth Institute of Environment Education and Research (BVIEER), he contributed to academic programmes in environmental science, biodiversity conservation, wildlife studies, environmental impact assessment and sustainability.[10]
In 2019, Bharucha chaired the committee appointed by the Ministry of Environment and Forests to recommend measures for strengthening environmental education in schools. The committee proposed integrating environmental education across subjects rather than treating it as a standalone discipline.[11]
He later chaired the University Grants Commission committee that prepared the national core curriculum and textbook for undergraduate environmental studies. The curriculum has been adopted by universities across India following the introduction of compulsory environmental studies at the undergraduate level.[12]
In addition to his academic work, Bharucha has written books on environmental education and biodiversity for both university students and younger readers. His children's book Day Out with History, illustrated with photographs taken at UNESCO World Heritage Sites, was published to introduce heritage and conservation to young audiences.[13]
Bharucha's research has focused on biodiversity conservation, protected areas, ecosystem management and environmental planning. His work has examined forests, wetlands, grasslands, sacred groves and the Western Ghats, with an emphasis on integrating conservation science with environmental education and public policy.[14]
Bharucha has written and spoken on the ecological significance of the Western Ghats and has called for stronger protection of environmentally sensitive regions. In 2010, he highlighted the ecological importance of the northern Western Ghats and warned that increasing development and tourism posed risks to biodiversity and fragile ecosystems.[15]
His research has also drawn attention to the conservation of India's sacred groves. Bharucha has described these traditional community-protected forests as important reservoirs of biodiversity and has expressed concern about their decline because of changing land-use practices and urbanisation.[16]
Bharucha has also commented on environmental restoration and water conservation. Writing on the restoration of India's lakes, he argued for integrated watershed management, community participation and long-term ecological planning to improve freshwater ecosystems.[17]
Bharucha has held appointments to government committees and statutory bodies concerned with environmental education, biodiversity conservation and wildlife management in India. In 2019, he chaired the committee appointed by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change to recommend measures for strengthening environmental education in schools.[18]
Bharucha has served as a member of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA), a statutory body of the Government of India responsible for strengthening tiger conservation under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.[19]
He has also served as a member of the Central Zoo Authority, a statutory body constituted under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 to oversee the development and management of zoos in India.[20]
Bharucha's research has focused on environmental education, biodiversity conservation, sustainability, environmental governance and public health. His work has included studies on ecosystem conservation, environmental planning, disease surveillance, urban health systems and education for sustainable development.[21]
He has co-authored peer-reviewed research published in the journal Global Health Action examining disease surveillance systems and the participation of private healthcare practitioners in monitoring non-communicable diseases in urban India.[22][23]
Bharucha has also contributed to international scholarship on environmental governance and sustainability. He co-authored concept papers published by Engagement Global, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, on the integration of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into national education systems.[24][25]
His published work has also included contributions to edited academic volumes on international environmental governance and climate adaptation. Bharucha co-authored a chapter in Engaging Countries: Strengthening Compliance with International Environmental Accords, published by MIT Press, and contributed to Adapting Cities to Climate Change, published by Routledge.[26][27]
Bharucha has also served as an advisor to conservation organisations, including the Nature Conservation and Public Research Centre (NGCPR), whose 2023–24 annual report acknowledges his guidance on biodiversity conservation and environmental research initiatives.[28]
Bharucha has received recognition for his contributions to environmental education and biodiversity conservation.
