Dwayne Nelson (born 5 September 1984) is a Northern Irish former footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He spent over two decades competing in the Northern Irish football pyramid, representing several top-flight clubs including Ballymena United, Glentoran, and Dungannon Swifts.[1]
Early career
Nelson developed his early skills playing youth football in the mid-Ulster region. During the 1998–99 season, he captained the Maghera Colts youth side. His performances as a young goalkeeper attracted cross-channel attention, earning him trials with English professional clubs including Manchester United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Sheffield Wednesday.[2] He also represented Coleraine in the Milk Cup youth tournament.[3]
Senior career
Early senior career and Dungannon Swifts
Nelson began his senior career with stints at Coleraine, making 2 league appearances,[4] and Limavady United before signing with Dungannon Swifts ahead of the 2006–07 season. He went on to make 81 league appearances during his first spell with the club.[4]
The defining moment of his first spell at Stangmore Park came on 5 May 2007 in the 2007 Irish Cup Final against Linfield at Windsor Park. After a dramatic 2–2 draw following extra time, the match became the first final in the competition's history to be decided by a penalty shootout.[5] Nelson produced two penalty saves to deny Linfield's Jim Ervin and Thomas Stewart, putting the underdogs on the brink of victory, though consecutive misses by his teammates ultimately resulted in a 3–2 shootout defeat.[5]
Ballymena United and Glentoran
In 2009, Nelson completed a transfer to Ballymena United. He spent seven seasons at the Ballymena Showgrounds, establishing himself as a reliable anchor for the Sky Blues in the top flight and amassing 227 career appearances for the club.[3][6]
In October 2016, Nelson joined Belfast-based club Glentoran.[7] He spent five years at The Oval, providing veteran depth to the squad.
Return to Dungannon Swifts
Following a spell with Moyola Park where he made 17 appearances,[8] Nelson returned to Dungannon Swifts in 2021 in a player-coach capacity.[9] He stepped up to make 12 top-flight league appearances during the 2021–22 NIFL Premiership campaign at 37 years of age before retiring from senior play.[10]
