The Dutch Student Chamber Choir (Dutch: Nederlands Studenten Kamerkoor) (NSK) is an amateur chamber choir founded in 1975.[1] The choir consists mainly of experienced singers studying at Dutch universities and vocational universities. The choir performs (a cappella) choir pieces at a semi-professional level.

Characteristics

The aim of the choir is to perform music at a high level, including music not (commonly) performed by regular Dutch student choirs.[1] Since the 1990s, the focus has been on performing contemporary music. Every year since then, a composition has been commissioned, rehearsed and performed.

Every year in the autumn, a choir is formed through nationwide auditions, selected from the most experienced amateur singers in the Dutch student community. During an intensive rehearsal period in the winter—spanning three weekends and one week—they work together on the programme with which they will tour the Netherlands. The rehearsal week is followed by three weekends of concerts.[2][3]

History

In 1974, a group of student choir singers, at the suggestion of Cees Rotteveel, decided to establish a national student chamber choir, following the example of the Netherlands Student Orchestra.[1] The choir was founded in Drienelo during the evaluation of the inter-academic music festival PAN, which had been held in Wageningen that year; thus, the Netherlands Student Chamber Choir became a reality. The impetus for this proposal was the ad hoc choir that had rehearsed David Porcelijn’s commissioned composition Soundpoem in Shikara-tala during the PAN festival in Wageningen.[4][5]

The first concert tour took place in the spring of 1975, led by conductor Cees Rotteveel. On 29 August 1978, the choir was officially incorporated into the Dutch Student Chamber Choir Foundation, which is registered with the Kamer van Koophandel.

Conductors

The NSK[6] has had a number of conductors over the years. For each project, besides the main conductor, a repetitor is also employed, and a vocal coach since 2010.[7] The repetitor is usually a conductor with less experience or who is still studying, who helps the conductor, for example with section rehearsals.
