Dimitri Courant is a French-Swiss political scientist and sociologist, specializing in deliberative democracy, sortition, and citizens’ assemblies. He is a postdoctoral fellow at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation, Harvard Kennedy School, and affiliated with the Centre Walras-Pareto (University of Lausanne) and the CNRS Centre for Sociological and Political Research in Paris (CRESPPA-CSU).[1][2]
Courant studied political science at the University of Lausanne, Switzerland, where he obtained his PhD with a dissertation on citizens’ assemblies and deliberative democracy.[3]
Courant was a postdoctoral fellow at the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation at Harvard Kennedy School, and a Fung Global Fellow at Princeton University. He is a research fellow at the National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) in France, affiliated with the Centre de recherches sociologiques et politiques de Paris (CRESPPA), and also teaches at the University of Lausanne.[4]
His commentary on France’s “Grand Débat” was quoted in the Swiss public service outlet Swissinfo, which highlighted the limits of the process.[5]
Courant’s research focuses on deliberative democracy, particularly on citizens’ assemblies and deliberative mini-publics. He has studied the Irish Citizens’ Assemblies, the French Citizens’ Convention for Climate, and the French Grand Débat national. His works analyze sortition as a democratic principle and the institutionalization of deliberative processes.[6]
His studies of the Irish Citizens’ Assembly and the Constitutional Convention have been referenced in Irish academic and policy documents, including a parliamentary Bill Digest on citizens’ assemblies.[7] His work has also been cited by Ireland’s Environmental Protection Agency in a 2025 research report on climate adaptation.[8]
He critically assessed the French Citizens’ Convention for Climate, for which he was an official scientific observer (2019–2020). His analysis of sortition was cited by Le Monde in its coverage of democratic legitimacy debates.[9]
In Switzerland, he was part of the team leading the first Citizen Initiative Review, a deliberative evaluation of a popular initiative held in Sion, adding a practical dimension to his comparative work on democratic innovations.[10] He also presented his research at Swiss academic events, including the TA-Swiss Forum “Promoting participatory methods in Switzerland”, held in Bern.[11]
Courant has written op-eds in Libération and contributed to La Vie des Idées[12] and Radio France.[13]
He was also the subject of a full-length interview on the French outlet Le Média, where he spoke about democratic tools in France, including the Grand Débat, the referendum initiative (RIC), and the Gilets Jaunes movement.[14]
