Derek Walker is a Welsh public official who has served as the Future Generations Commissioner for Wales since 1 March 2023, a post created under the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act 2015 to act as an independent guardian of the interests of future generations and to promote sustainable development across Welsh public bodies.

Walker launched his first strategic plan, Cymru Can, in 2023, outlining priorities in areas such as economic well‑being, climate and nature, health, culture and the Welsh language.

Walker was appointed Future Generations Commissioner by the Welsh Government in December 2022, succeeding Sophie Howe.^[1][2] He took office on 1 March 2023 and launched his first strategic plan, Cymru Can, shortly afterwards outlining priorities in areas such as economic well‑being, climate and nature, health, culture and the Welsh language. He has stated that "Wales faces an unrecognisable future without urgent action to protect the environment, tackle poverty and ill health."^[3]

To mark the 10 year anniversary of the passing of the Well-being of Future Generations Act, Walker has called for "bigger and faster change."^[4] He has also worked to influence international thinking on future generations.^[5][6]
