Dell Eastman Harris is an American musician, songwriter, producer, and DJ based in Atlanta, Georgia. He records and performs under the names o8o, DellGod, YDG, and Mestizo. Harris fronted the pop group ThunderKatz, which signed to Irv Gotti's I.G. Records and Universal Records in 2008. He has released music with DJ AC Slater on the Trouble & Bass and Party Like Us labels, appeared on Vice's The Rap Monument (2015), and co-wrote a song for the 2007 film The Perfect Holiday.
Harris co-wrote "Perfect Christmas," a song performed by Charlie Murphy in the 2007 film The Perfect Holiday, which starred Queen Latifah, Morris Chestnut, and Gabrielle Union.[1] Harris wrote the song with Melvin Hough and Rivelino Wouter.[1][2]
Harris fronted ThunderKatz, also known as T!Katz, a six-member pop group from Atlanta. The group signed to I.G. Records, Irv Gotti's imprint, distributed through Universal Records.[3][4]
DJBooth described their sound as "electro-punk influences combined with a ghetto savvy" and reported a planned debut album, 19hundred80something, for late 2008.[3] The group's single "3 AM" was co-written with Rock City, who later wrote Rihanna's 2012 hit "Diamonds".[5] Creative Loafing Atlanta profiled Harris during this period.[6]
In 2015, Harris contributed to The Rap Monument, a collaborative hip-hop project put out by Vice. Other contributors included Nipsey Hussle, Raekwon, Killer Mike, YG, Young Thug, and Prodigy.[7][8]
Harris formed White Light Syndrome, an electronic duo, with DJ Smiles and Niko Villamor. Creative Loafing Atlanta covered the group in connection with White Light Records.[9] In 2009, DJBooth reported on the group and Harris's free mixtape.[10] A White Light Syndrome track was later used in the Fox series The Mindy Project; a BMI cue sheet was registered in December 2014.[11]
Harris joined the roster of Trouble & Bass, a New York label founded by Drop The Lime. DJ and producer AC Slater was also on the label.[12]
Harris and Slater first connected when Toddla T invited them to record a remix for his BBC Radio 1 show.[13][14] The two went on to record Right Now, released September 24, 2010 through Mishka NYC. Acclaim Magazine called it "a unique mix of electronic music meets party rap."[15] A follow-up, Right Now Volume 2, came out on iTunes with production from AC Slater and Xaphoon Jones.[15]
Harris and Slater performed together as AC & Dell, playing shows in Richmond, Virginia[16] In March 2012, Harris played the Trouble & Bass "Tropic Terror" showcase in Miami alongside Plastician, Bart B More, and Drop the Lime.[17]
"Ass Drop," a 2012 single with AC Slater, reached number 9 on the Beatport Dubstep chart. Elektro Daily named it "2am Track of the Week" and wrote that "Dell Harris's flow is exceptional."[18] Harris also remixed tracks on the Fiji EP by Ryan Marks of LOUDPVCK, released on Party Like Us in October 2012.[19]
Complex premiered "Go Harder" in 2013, a track from AC Slater's Night Moves EP on Party Like Us.[20] Harris released his third album, Chateau Rap, on Party Like Us in October 2013, with Rome Fortune and Villa among the featured artists.[21] Harris and AC Slater released "Night Bass Thing" with UK producer Taiki Nulight in 2019.[22]
Harris has been active as a DJ since at least 2007, when his first performance appeared on Resident Advisor.[23] He has put out music on Atlantic Records, Motown, Trouble & Bass, and Play Me Records.[23] In 2018 and 2019 he performed in Shanghai at Le Baron and Dash as part of the Samo China Tour. He has collaborated with Masiwei of Higher Brothers, a Chinese hip-hop group.[23][24]
Harris has worked across several genres. DJBooth described his ThunderKatz work as having "electro-punk influences combined with a ghetto savvy."[3] His releases on Trouble & Bass and Party Like Us drew on house, electro, dubstep, and hip-hop.[12][20] Harris has named J Dilla, Flying Lotus, Tricky, and Juicy J as influences on his lo-fi jazz work.[25]
