David Solet (born March 9, 1976) is an American attorney, prosecutor, and military officer who served as Chief of the Cold Case Homicide Unit for the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office in Massachusetts from 2019 to 2025. Over the course of his legal career, he has prosecuted cases involving homicide, organized crime, narcotics trafficking, child exploitation, public corruption, and cyber-related offenses. He has also served as Chief Legal Counsel for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security.

Solet has been involved in the investigation and prosecution of long-unsolved homicide cases, including investigations that received regional media attention. Coverage of his work has included a feature by Boston Magazine on the resolution of what was described as the oldest cold-case homicide successfully prosecuted in Massachusetts.

In addition to his career as a state prosecutor, Solet serves in the United States Army Reserve as an officer in the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG).In 2025, Solet, a member of the Democratic Party, resigned from the Middlesex District Attorney's Office and announced his candidacy for the next Middlesex District Attorney.

Early Life and Education

David Solet grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and developed longstanding ties to Middlesex County.

He attended Buckingham Browne & Nichols School before continuing his education at Princeton University, where he earned an A.B. in Politics and graduated summa cum laude. He later attended Harvard Law School, where he earned a Juris Doctor (J.D) and graduated cum laude.

Following his graduation from Harvard Law School, Solet joined the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office in 2001. He began his legal career as a Juvenile Court prosecutor in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and as a domestic violence prosecutor in Somerville, Massachusetts.

During his tenure with the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office, Solet held multiple roles, including service in the Special Investigations Unit and as an organized crime prosecutor. He later served as General Counsel for the office, advising on legal, policy, and ethical matters. He was the first Chief of the Cyber Protection Unit, a unit dedicated to prosecuting online child exploitation and other cybercrimes.

As a prosecutor, Solet worked on investigations and prosecutions involving violent street gangs, organized crime, narcotics trafficking, child exploitation, internet crimes, public corruption, homicide, and complex fraud cases. He also participated in the training of law enforcement officers and prosecutors on topics including search warrants, digital evidence, and the law of weapons.

From 2015 to 2019, Solet served as Legal Counsel for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Public Safety and Security. In that role, he advised the Secretary of Public Safety on legal, legislative, and policy and provided legal guidance to agencies, including the Massachusetts State Police, Department of Correction, Parole Board, Sex Offender Registry Board, and the Massachusetts National Guard.

In 2019, Solet returned to the Middlesex District Attorney’s Office and became Chief of the Cold Case Homicide Unit. In that position, he oversaw investigations into unsolved homicide and sexual assault cases, solving more than a dozen cold cases, including

One of Solet’s investigations identified the real killer in a 1980 murder in which the wrong man was convicted and sentenced to prison. The wrongfully convicted man, Kenneth Waters, served 18 years in prison before his exoneration. His story was later turned into a Hollywood film, Conviction, starring Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell.

Military Career

Solet was commissioned as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army Reserve and graduated from initial training at Fort Benning, Georgia, and the Judge Advocate General’s Legal Center and School in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2018. At the time of his graduation, he was named to the Commandant’s List.

As a member of the 3d Legal Operations Detachment in Brockton, Massachusetts, Solet served as a Special Victims Counsel, representing victims of sexual assault, and as a Defense Support of Civil Authorities (DSCA) attorney. He was promoted to the rank of Captain in 2019. He was mobilized to support the vaccination mission in the City of Boston in 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Solet later served as a Trial Defense Services Attorney with the 154th Legal Operations Detachment in Alexandria, Virginia, and as an Administrative Law Attorney with the 377th Theater Sustainment Command in New Orleans, Louisiana.

He completed the Judge Advocate Officer Advanced Course in 2025 and was named an Honor Graduate. He was promoted to the rank of Major in 2025.
