David Cora is a Peruvian Thoroughbred racing jockey whose North American career has been based principally on the Pennsylvania racing circuit.[2][3] In Peru, he won the Derby Nacional with Quicklift in 1995 and Grozny in 1998; the latter victory completed Grozny's Peruvian Triple Crown.[2][4]

After moving to the United States in 2000, Cora won three consecutive riding titles at Penn National Race Course from 2001 through 2003 and a fourth in 2013.[5][6] He recorded a career-high 300 North American victories in 2001, ranked fourth nationally by wins in 2002, and reached his 2,500th North American victory in 2022.[7] Through August 13, 2026, Equibase credited him with 2,769 wins from 18,792 North American starts and mount earnings of more than $44.7 million.[1]

Early life and career in Peru

Cora began working at a racetrack in Peru at age 17. He first joined the stable of trainer Raúl Arriagada, where he learned to gallop and control horses, and later worked with trainer Carlos Gastañeta, whom Cora credited with refining his riding and providing early opportunities.[2]

Five months after making his professional riding debut, Cora won the 1995 Derby Nacional aboard Quicklift. The race had 18 starters. Cora later said that he followed instructions to save ground along the inside before defeating Pato Loco, who had taken a wider route.[2] The victory was the first of Cora's two wins in Peru's principal classic.[8]

In 1998, Cora rode Grozny through the colt's three-race Peruvian Triple Crown campaign, winning the Polla de Potrillos, Clásico Ricardo Ortiz de Zevallos, and Derby Nacional.[2][4] In the Derby, Grozny caught the filly Madame Equis late in the race. Cora recalled that Grozny's stablemate Palestino had pressured Madame Equis before Grozny made his run, and he described the contest as one of his best victories.[2] Cora later identified his Derby wins on Quicklift and Grozny as the most important victories of his Peruvian career.[9]

Career in the United States

Move to Pennsylvania and riding titles

Cora moved to the United States in 2000, following other Peruvian riders who had established careers there.[9] He initially rode at Aqueduct Racetrack, where he won five races, and then spent time in New Jersey before relocating to Pennsylvania and making Penn National his principal base.[2] In his first North American season, he won 46 of 629 starts.[7] Cora attributed his subsequent progress partly to an intensive morning routine in which he exercised about 12 horses a day.[2]

In 2001, Cora won 300 races across North America, a career high that placed him seventh nationally by number of wins. Of those, 279 came at Penn National and secured his first title as the track's leading rider.[7][5] He won 295 races in 2002, the fourth-highest total in the United States that year, including 268 at Penn National for a second track title.[7][5] On October 19, 2002, he rode six winners on a nine-race Penn National program.[3]

Cora recorded 244 North American wins in 2003.[7] At Penn National, he finished the season with 233 wins, 163 seconds, and 162 thirds from 1,164 mounts, whose purse earnings totaled $1,445,368, giving him a third consecutive riding title.[5] He missed the final three programs after a December 27 spill in which his mount fell. Cora sustained a broken left collarbone and shoulder blade and was expected to be out for at least six weeks.[5]

Stakes horses and fourth Penn National title

One of Cora's most valuable North American victories came aboard Cardashi in the 2009 Pennsylvania Governor's Cup at Penn National. Cardashi, a locally based claiming horse making his stakes debut, started at odds of 29–1 and defeated Blue Sailor by 1+12 lengths. The five-furlong turf race, then the richest event in Penn National history, carried a $200,000 purse.[10] Later that year, Cora rode Turbo Speed to victory in the Pennsylvania Nursery Stakes at Philadelphia Park.[11]

Cora was also one of seven jockeys to ride Rapid Redux during the gelding's record-setting winning streak. Cora rode the horse before the streak reached 20 consecutive victories in November 2011, then a modern North American record.[12]

In 2013, Cora earned his fourth Penn National riding title, winning 178 of 932 starts at the track.[6] Across North America that year, he won 180 of 962 starts and earned nearly $3.4 million, the highest single-season purse total of his career through 2022.[7]

Cora reached 2,000 North American victories on March 29, 2014, when he rode Raging Smoke to win the fifth race at Parx. At the time, he had $27,590,755 in earnings from 12,861 mounts.[3] He and Raging Smoke also won the 2014 New Start Stakes.[7] A collarbone fracture sidelined Cora in 2019; while recuperating in Lima, he said that he intended to resume riding and eventually hoped to remain in racing in another role.[2]

Later milestones

On June 19, 2020, Cora recorded his 2,400th North American win aboard Song of Indy in a five-furlong turf race at Penn National. He had exercised the horse during the track's nearly three-month interruption and predicted before the race that Song of Indy would provide the milestone victory.[13]

Cora's 2,500th victory came on February 9, 2022, aboard Boneyardholler in the third race at Penn National. Boneyardholler rallied along the inside to win the $7,500 maiden claiming race by a neck.[7] Later in 2022, Cora won the Lebanon Valley Stakes with Midnight Hauler and the $200,000 Imply Stakes at Parx with Midnight Parade.[14][15]

His later Pennsylvania stakes wins included the 2023 Penn Ladies Dash at Penn National aboard Simply Stated and the 2024 Susquehanna Valley Stakes there aboard Stassi.[16][17] In June 2025, Cora rode Houghton Shuffle to win the $100,000 Page McKenney Handicap at Parx. Squeezed between horses at the start, Houghton Shuffle settled near the rear before rallying to win by half a length. Cora had ridden the gelding in each of his first 12 starts.[18]
