Daniel "Danny" Howat is a Canadian baseball player from Brantford, Ontario, who plays as a pitcher and first baseman in the Canadian Baseball League (CBL), the fully professional independent baseball league formerly known as the Intercounty Baseball League (IBL).[1] A left-handed pitcher, Howat has been recognized for leading the IBL in innings pitched in 2023 and in earned run average among relief pitchers in 2025.[1]

Early life and amateur career

Howat was born and raised in Brantford, Ontario. He attended Assumption College Catholic High School, where he was named Rookie of the Year in his Grade 9 baseball season and Most Valuable Player in Grade 10.[2] A scouting report from Prep Baseball Report described him as a 6-foot-1, 225-pound left-handed pitcher with a clean three-quarter delivery and a fastball in the 85-90 mph range, noting his command and feel for the strike zone.[3]

Brantford Red Sox (2021–2023)

Howat made his Intercounty Baseball League debut with the Brantford Red Sox in 2021. In his rookie season, he posted a 4.08 earned run average with 58 strikeouts and a 3–4 win–loss record as a left-handed pitcher.[5]

In 2023, Howat led the IBL in innings pitched, establishing himself as a workhorse left-hander capable of handling a heavy starting load.[1]

Welland Jackfish (2024–present)

In April 2024, the Welland Jackfish announced the signing of Howat ahead of their 2024 IBL season.[5]

In 2023, Howat was a member of the Welland Jackfish team that won the IBL championship — the franchise's second league title — defeating the Toronto Maple Leafs in front of a sellout home crowd at Welland Stadium.[6]

Canadian Baseball League era

On November 24, 2025, the Intercounty Baseball League announced that it would transition to a fully professional structure and rebrand as the Canadian Baseball League beginning with the 2026 season.[7][8]
