Cynewise (also Cunwise or Kyneswitha) was queen consort to Penda of Mercia (died 655). She is earliest known Mercian queen.
Little biographical information is known about Cynewise. Based on her name, it is speculated she might have been a daughter of Cynegils of Wessex. Cynewise is the only wife of Penda named by Bede and the likely but uncertain mother of his children.<ref>{{
During the Battle of the Winwaed between Mercia and Northumbria that resulted in Penda's demise, Queen Cynewise held 10-year-old prince Ecgfrith of Northumbria (son of Oswiu) hostage. This indicates she took an active role at court and was trusted with important matters.
Cynewise is not present in records after her husband's death in 655; it is possible she might have died with him or shortly after.
