Confirel Co., Ltd. is a Cambodian food-processing company founded in 2001 by entrepreneur Hay Ly Eang.[1] Based in Phnom Penh, the company initially developed products made from the sap of the Cambodian sugar palm, including palm sugar, wine and vinegar.[2] It later expanded its range to include products made with Kampot pepper and other Cambodian agricultural ingredients.[3]

History

Confirel was established in 2001. According to a 2011 report by the Cambodian Organic Agriculture Association, the company investigated production and distribution methods during 2002 and 2003, conducted pilot production, and moved into full production in early 2004.[1] In July 2004, The Cambodia Daily reported that Confirel was producing palm wine in Kampong Speu province and seeking markets in the United States, Japan and Australia.[2]

The company was among Cambodian processors that sought to commercialise a wider range of products from palm sap. A case study published by the Food and Agriculture Organization described research undertaken by Confirel and other Cambodian organisations before the creation of the geographical indication for Kampong Speu palm sugar. The research was applied to granulated palm sugar, vinegar, palm wine and palm liquor.[4]

Palm-sugar processing and exports

The FAO case study identified Confirel as the largest processor, packager and trader of palm sugar and sap among the enterprises examined in the Kampong Speu production area, and noted that it served both Cambodian and export markets.[4] These descriptions relate to the period covered by the study and do not represent a current market-share measurement.

In 2010, Confirel general manager Chhon Ravuth told The Cambodia Daily that the company had exported 14 tonnes of organic palm sugar and four tonnes of geographical-indication Kampong Speu palm sugar during the previous year. The reported destinations included France, Malaysia, Australia and the United States.[5] The 2011 organic-agriculture report separately recorded production of approximately 40 tonnes of certified palm sugar in 2010, of which about 30 per cent was exported.[1]

A 2019 study of the Cambodian palm-sugar value chain listed Confirel among seven companies involved in palm-sugar exports.[6]

Products and quality control

Historical sources describe Confirel's palm-derived products as including sugar, wine, vinegar, cocktails and spirits.[1] By 2023, its range also included Kampot pepper, pepper-flower tea, palm spirit and palm-sugar confectionery.[3] A 2023 profile by Cambodianess reported that the company used food-safety and quality-control systems in preparing palm sugar for markets with regulated hygiene standards, and that it held HACCP certification at that time.[3]

The company's work with producers has included quality and hygiene training. In 2010, its general manager said that Confirel was teaching participating farmers production techniques intended to improve the consistency of Kampong Speu palm sugar.[5]
