Code of Rainbow is an epic fantasy book series written by Chinese-born scientist and author Weiqi Wang, D.Phil. It introduces the "Sci-M-Fi" (Science-Magic-Fiction) literary genre, which proposes that magic can be explained by real-world physical scientific theories, enabling a seamless transition from fantasy to hard science fiction throughout the series.

As of 2019, three books have been released, with at least seven books planned in total:

1. Soaring Flame and the Dragon-transcending Magimal (2016)^[1]
2. Ancient Barons and the Returned Assassin (2018)^[2]
3. Legends of Azure and the Masked Planet (August 7, 2019, 283 pages, paperback and ebook formats)^[3]

The series' central thesis is that "magic is the uncharted territory of science". It also incorporates real-world social issues such as animal welfare, social justice, and peacekeeping. Suitable for all ages, the first book reached #1 on Amazon's global Children's Ebook chart, #2 on the global Young Adult Ebook chart, and #4 on the global Fantasy Ebook chart, receiving hundreds of reader reviews.

Weiqi Wang earned his D.Phil. (Doctor of Philosophy) from the University of Oxford and later worked as a bioinformatics scientist at Stanford University, contributing to multiple projects funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH). He also served as a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University School of Medicine and is engaged in big data research in human immunology.^[4]

He began writing the Code of Rainbow series during his doctoral studies at Oxford, when self-publishing was not yet widely accessible. After moving to the United States and starting a family in 2016, his unborn daughter inspired him to revisit and complete the unfinished manuscript. He self-published the first book via Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) in 2019, maintaining a schedule of one book per year^[4]

The world of Code of Rainbow is built on seven elemental magic lineages, each represented by a color:

• Fire (red), Water (blue), Wind (gray), Earth (yellow), Light (white), Darkness (black), Lightning (purple)

More advanced magic types include Life magic (green) and Death magic (brown), with additional types to be revealed in later books.

A defining feature of the magic system is that a wizard's power grows through understanding the Essence of Magic Elements—a process analogous to scientific advancement. The essences are categorized into three types:

1. Substance: Elements with tangible physical properties (Earth, Wind, Water)
2. Energy: Elements involving force and transformation (Fire)
3. Law: Abstract elements governing fundamental universal rules

Mastery of an element's essence is required to reach the Master level of magical power.

The story takes place on a planet with six continents. In ancient times, dragons ruled the world and enslaved all other races. Approximately 3,000 years ago, the legendary wizard Spanflow Libral led the human revolution, defeated the dragon armies, and forced the entire dragon species to migrate permanently to the Holiness Continent (an event known as the Grand Migration).

Libral founded the Cylone Calendar (CC) and the Sunrise Alliance to maintain peace and train future wizards, ushering in the era of human civilization.

The six continents are:

1. Thundeross Continent: Dominated by humans; home to the Arkwald Empire and the Institute of Libral
2. Snowhill Continent: Home to the Astandos Empire; cold climate
3. Knighton Continent: Home to the Moniton Empire
4. Rainbow Continent: Limited information revealed
5. Holiness Continent: Dragon reservation; off-limits to humans
6. Allsouls Continent: Destroyed during the human-dragon war; now submerged

The Azure Ocean connects the continents and hides secrets related to the mythical "Planet of Halfgods".

Magical power is ranked from lowest to highest:

1. Novice: Grades 1–3
2. Adept: Grades 4–6 (maximum grade at the Institute of Libral)
3. Expert: Levels 7–9 (Level 9 = Professor level; first exposure to Elemental Essence)
4. Master: Level 10 (achieved by mastering any one Elemental Essence)
5. Baron: Magimal equivalent of a human Master
6. Legendary Master: Far above ordinary Masters; one step below Halfgod
7. Halfgod: The highest known power level; transcends human limitations^[1]

• Soarame: Protagonist. A young wizard at the Institute of Libral, abandoned as an infant and raised by his adoptive uncle Filton. Possesses the extremely rare Magic-magnetic Physique (making him a Magneer), which allows him to see and attract all magic elements. Specializes in Water magic. Brave and kind, he founded the "Resurgers" team for the Dragon & Empires magic sport.
• Snower: Soarame's bonded magimal, appearing as a small cat. Has extraordinary powers including healing fatal injuries and teleportation. Shares an equal, non-coercive bond with Soarame.
• Halgon: Soarame's roommate and close friend. Specializes in Earth and Darkness magic. Calm, analytical, and highly intelligent. || He is secretly a half-dragon, born to a human wizard mother and a dragon father, granting him immense innate power. ||
• Scankeen / Mr. Swanflew: Soarame's first magic teacher. A Legendary Master wizard and board member of the Sunrise Alliance. Left Soarame at the Institute to undertake a classified mission.
• Max: Primary antagonist of Book 1. Owner of the MagiMax magic shop, an Expert-level Fire wizard. Possesses the Godmade magigear Mercy of the Demiurge, which grants near-invulnerability.
