Cinnamonning is a Danish hazing tradition typical of Jutland, in which bachelor men (and sometimes unmarried women) get covered in cinnamon by their peers when they turn 25 [1][2][3]. This tradition dates back to the 2000s, but is inspired by a much earlier tradition of covering bachelor men turning 30 with pepper. This tradition is, in turn, inspired by a Danish word for a bachelor, which is pebersvend (lit. 'pepper merchant'), originating in 16th century and denoting merchants who were members of the Hanseatic League, and who traditionally did not marry.[citation needed]

In the tradition of Cinnamonning, the unmarried 25-year-old gets restrained, typically attached to a road sign pole or a railing, covered in water to increase adherence of cinnamon, and then covered in a large amount of cinnamon powder (low grade cinnamon is sold in bags of over a kilogram for that express purpose) [4]. The 25-year-old is sometimes offered swimming goggles and a face mask for safety. The resulting patches of cinnamon are a common sight in the towns of Jutland.
