Christa Lewis (born 1964) is an American voice actor, audiobook narrator, and director. A bilingual performer in English and German, she has narrated over 350 audiobook titles across literary fiction, nonfiction, corporate narration, and documentary work. She is known for narrating the English-language premiere of Elfriede Jelinek's The Children of the Dead, published by Yale University Press as part of the Margellos World Republic of Letters series. Lewis has received ten AudioFile Earphones Awards, a SOVAS Voice Arts Award, and two Audie Award nominations.[1][2] She also performs under the pseudonym Pippa Jayne within the romance and romantasy genres.[3]

Early life and education

Lewis was born in Astoria, Queens, New York. She attended the Boston University College of Fine Arts, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Acting. In 1990, she relocated to Germany, where she began a career in international media and broadcasting.

Career

Broadcasting and commercial work

From 1995 to 2012, Lewis was a voice and news reader for Deutsche Welle (DW),[citation needed] Germany's public international broadcaster. Her work as a documentary narrator and news reader for DW-TV reached audiences in over 60 countries. She has provided voice-over for global campaigns including BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Apple, and Lufthansa.

Audiobook narration

Lewis is a narrator for publishers including Penguin Random House, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Simon & Schuster, Hachette Book Group, Tantor Media, and New Directions.[2] She has narrated over 350 titles across literary fiction, historical nonfiction, science writing, and corporate training.

Literary translation work

Lewis narrated the world English-language audiobook premiere of The Children of the Dead by Elfriede Jelinek, translated by Gitta Honegger and published by Tantor Media in association with Yale University Press' Margellos World Republic of Letters series in February 2025.[4] Jelinek, the Austrian author and playwright, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2004.[5] The Children of the Dead is considered one of the defining works of Jelinek's career.[6]

Lewis has also narrated two works by Austrian author Marlen Haushofer for New Directions Publishing: The Wall (2024) and Killing Stella (2025).[7] Haushofer's work was a significant influence on Jelinek, who dedicated one of her plays to her.[8] Killing Stella received reviews in The New York Times, the Washington Post, Publishers Weekly, Bookforum, and Booklist.[9][10][11]

Lewis narrated Floating Coast by Bathsheba Demuth, a work of environmental history published by W. W. Norton & Company that won the 2021 John H. Dunning Prize from the American Historical Association, the 2020 George Perkins Marsh Prize from the American Society for Environmental History, the 2020 Hal K. Rothman Book Prize, and was longlisted for the 2020 Cundill History Prize.[12] It was also named an NPR and The New York Times Editor's Choice pick.[12] AudioFile described Lewis's performance as one that "balances authoritative depth with the author's lyrical, luminous prose."[13]

Other notable narrations

Lewis narrated Wolf by Wolf and Blood for Blood by Ryan Graudin, both receiving AudioFile Earphones Awards.[14] Additional Earphones Award-winning titles include Five Tuesdays in Winter by Lily King, Infinite Home by Kathleen Alcott, and The Mare by Mary Gaitskill.[15]

Audiobook directing

Lewis received an AudioFile Earphones Award for directing the audiobook of Inlands by Elin Willows, performed by Ann Richardson, which AudioFile described as "thoroughly compelling" and "illuminating."[16]

Pippa Jayne

Under the pseudonym Pippa Jayne, Lewis narrates romance and romantasy titles for publishers including Podium Audio.

Voice coaching

Lewis has coached voice actors since 2014, with clients including SAG-AFTRA members and Audie Award nominees.[17]

Video games and animation

Lewis voiced the character SOPHIA in the video game Call of Duty: Black Ops III. Her animation credits include lead roles in The School for Little Vampires and Lotte in Gadgetville.
