center3 is a digital infrastructure company headquartered in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of stc Group (Saudi Telecom Company) and was inaugurated in October 2022.[1] The company operates data centers, submarine cable systems, and internet exchange points, primarily serving the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
In 2020, stc Group announced an initiative known internally as "MENA Hub" — a plan to establish a major digital infrastructure hub for the MENA region, backed by an investment of approximately US$1 billion. The initiative was subsequently developed into a standalone independent entity, which was formally inaugurated as center3 in October 2022.[2]
The company's formation was described by stc Group as aligned with Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 national development strategy, which includes goals related to the expansion of the country's digital economy and infrastructure.[2]
center3 owns and operates digital infrastructure assets previously held by stc Group, including carrier-neutral data centers, submarine fiber-optic cable systems, international points of presence (PoPs), and internet exchange points (IXPs).[1]
center3 operates a portfolio of carrier-neutral data centers located primarily in Saudi Arabia and the region.[3] The company has stated a target of reaching 1 Gigawatt of total data center capacity by 2030.[4]
center3 participates in 16 submarine cable systems, including five that were under construction as of 2024, with landing capabilities spanning Europe, Africa, and Asia.[5] Notable cable systems include the 2Africa cable and its Pearls extension, and the Saudi Vision Cable, which crosses the Red Sea with landing stations in Jeddah, Yanbu, Dhaba, and Haql.[6]
center3 operates three internet exchange points (IXPs) as part of its infrastructure portfolio.[7]
In December 2023, center3 announced a definitive agreement to acquire CMC Networks, a networking services provider headquartered in South Africa. The acquisition was completed in June 2024, with center3 acquiring 100% of CMC Networks Mauritius and 49% of CMC Networks South Africa.[8]
CMC Networks operated across more than 110 service locations, with coverage across 51 of 54 countries in Africa and 12 countries in the Middle East, as well as regional hubs in Europe, the Americas, and Asia Pacific.
