The POF CW-39 is an indigenous 7.62×39mm caliber assault rifle developed and manufactured by Pakistan Ordnance Factories (POF). First unveiled publicly at the International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) in November 2022, the rifle is based on the modular architecture of the POF BW-20 battle rifle platform. It is intended to eventually replace aging Type-56 rifles currently serving with the Pakistani military, paramilitary forces, and law enforcement agencies.[1]
For several decades, the primary infantry weapon of the Pakistan Armed Forces has been the G3A3 battle rifle, manufactured under license by POF, alongside Chinese-supplied Type-56 (AK-47 variant) rifles used heavily by paramilitary forces like the Frontier Corps and Pakistan Rangers.
In the early 2020s, POF began developing a new family of modular weapons to modernize its small arms catalogue. This resulted in the 7.62×51mm NATO caliber POF BW-20. Utilizing the core receiver architecture, internal mechanisms, and tooling of the BW-20, POF engineers downscaled the system to create the CW-39, chambered in the lighter, widely available 7.62×39mm cartridge.
The weapon system was introduced alongside the BW-20 at IDEAS 2022. Since its unveiling, pre-production prototypes of the CW-39 have been subjected to field testing, environmental trials, and evaluation by Pakistani security forces to ascertain reliability and accuracy in diverse terrain conditions.
Unlike gas-operated assault rifles typical of the 7.62×39mm caliber (such as the AK-47), the CW-39 utilizes a roller-delayed blowback operating system. This mechanism is directly derived from the POF-produced G3 rifle series. Because the internal mechanical cycle and manual of arms mimic the G3, the design reduces the time and costs associated with institutional retraining for Pakistani service personnel.
