Browser Use is an open-source Python library and browser automation system that allows artificial intelligence agents to control web browsers. It converts webpages into representations that language models can use to navigate pages, enter text, manage tabs and invoke actions.[1][2]

History

Browser Use was created in 2024 by Magnus Müller and Gregor Žunič after the two met through ETH Zurich's Student Project House. They released the project as open-source software and later formed a company offering a managed service alongside the self-hosted library.[1][3]

The project drew wider attention in March 2025 after it was identified as one of the components used by the Manus AI agent. TechCrunch reported that its daily downloads rose from about 5,000 on 3 March to 28,000 on 10 March.[1] Later that month, Browser Use announced a US$17 million seed round led by Felicis, with participation from A Capital, Nexus Venture Partners and other investors.[4] Forbes later profiled the project and its founders, describing Browser Use as an open-source library that turns websites into machine-readable representations for agents.[2]

Software

The open-source library is written in Python and distributed under the MIT License.[5] Browser Use combines page structure with browser automation so that an AI model can select elements and carry out actions. The software can be self-hosted, while the company also operates a cloud service.[1]

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology's 2025 AI Agent Index classified Browser Use as an enterprise agent and documented its use of textual webpage representations, browser actions and autonomous planning. The index described the agent as capable of planning and executing tasks after receiving an initial instruction.[6]

Security research

In April 2025, Kudelski Security examined the separate browser-use/web-ui interface distributed by the same GitHub organization. The researchers reported that its configuration import used Python's pickle serialization, allowing a malicious configuration file to execute arbitrary code. They also found publicly reachable instances of the interface and described a way for a malicious webpage to target a locally running instance when browser security features were disabled.[7]

A 2025 security study used Browser Use for a white-box evaluation of browsing-agent risks and reported prompt injection, domain-validation bypass and credential-exfiltration attacks.[8] Another study evaluating Browser Use and three other web-use agents demonstrated attacks based on malicious webpage content; in its Browser Use test, the agent was induced to expose a local hosts file.[9]

The MIT AI Agent Index reported that it found no built-in mechanism for identifying Browser Use automation to third-party websites and described sandboxing as recommended rather than mandatory.[6]
