Education

Bella Lack (born 2003)[1] is an English conservationist, environmentalist and author. She gained prominence as a teenager.

[2]

Early life

Lack grew up near Richmond Park in South West London.[3] Lack attended the Godolphin and Latymer School for her GCSEs,[4] took a gap year off school to make time for campaigning,[5] and completed her A Levels at Brighton College in 2022.[6] She subsequently began her studies at the University of Edinburgh.

Career

Lack was interested in wildlife from a young age. At age 11, she learned about the effects of the palm oil industry on orangutan habitats.[3][7] She grew a social media following, through which she was invited to become a youth ambassador for the Born Free Foundation and was invited to speak at the 2018 Illegal Wildlife Trade Conference.[8][9] Also in 2018, Lack made a speech outside 10 Downing Street during a UK Youth Climate Coalition march, began writing for publications such as The Ecologist,[10] and launched a petition to ban the use of wild animals in UK circuses. The latter collected over 200 thousand signatures, and the Wild Animals In Circuses Bill passed the next year.[11][12] She also joined the Jane Goodall Institute, Save the Asian Elephants (STAE)[13] and the RSPCA.[14]

In 2019, Lack contributed to Chris Packham's A Peoples Manifesto for Wildlife alongside Georgia Locock[15] and gave a talk at the TEDxBrighton on the climate crisis and Eco-anxiety.[16] She also co-founded the charity Reserva with Callie Broaddus.[17] Lack was awarded Canon Young Champion of the Year at the 2020 Global Good Awards.[18]

Lack contributed to and starred in Cyril Dion's documentary Animal alongside the French environmentalist Vipulan Puvaneswaran and also featuring Jane Goodall. Animal premiered at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. In the documentary, the two young activists visit India and try to help clean a beach from plastic pollution.[19] Animal was nominated for the European Young Audience Award at the European Film Awards.[20] Lack received a 2021 Points of Light Award.[21]

In 2020, Penguin Life acquired the rights to publish Lack's debut book The Children of the Anthropocene in 2022.[22][23] The book is foreworded by Greta Thunberg and contains a collection of stories about climate change from young people across the world.[24] That year, Madeleine Cuff of The i Paper described Lack as "one of the UK's leading environmental activists".[25]
