Draft:Awori dialect

Awori (Yoruba: Èdè Àwórì) is a dialect of the Yoruba language spoken by the Awori people of southwestern Nigeria.[1] It is spoken principally in Awori communities located in present-day Lagos State and Ogun State.[1]

Classification

Awori is a member of the Yoruba dialect continuum and belongs to the Yoruboid branch of the Volta–Niger subgroup of the Niger–Congo language family.[2] Linguistic studies generally treat Awori as a dialect of Yoruba rather than as a separate language.[1]

Geographic distribution

The dialect is spoken in several Awori settlements across Lagos State and Ogun State, including communities in and around Ota, Igbesa, Agbara, Agege, Isheri and Ilogbo Eremi.[1]

Linguistic features

Awori exhibits phonological, lexical and grammatical features that distinguish it from other Yoruba dialects.[1] Research on the dialect has examined aspects of its syntax, including the formation of interrogative constructions.[1]
