Arun Joseph is a Software Engineer, Cybersecurity Researcher based in London. He is currently a software engineer at Google. Known for his work in full-stack web development and application security, Joseph previously worked at Zoho Corporation. In 2019, he led his university team to win the national Smart India Hackathon organized by the Indian Ministry of Civil Aviation.[1] [2] [3][4]. He is the author of the book C in 30 days [5] and is highly active in the vulnerability disclosure and bug bounty community under the alias d4rkm4tter [6]

Early life and education

Joseph was raised in Tamil Nadu, India. He attended Montfort Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Manapparai, Trichy, where he served as the School Pupil Leader.

During his youth, Joseph was highly decorated in the National Cadet Corps (NCC) as an Air Wing Junior Division Cadet for the 3 TN Air Squadron in Trichy. Between 2011 and 2013, he was awarded "Best NCC Cadet" for his directorate (representing Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands). An award-winning marksman, he was named best shooter for the .22 rifle. As a Parade Commander, he represented his directorate at the Republic Day Camp (RDC) in New Delhi, where he met with prominent national figures including Chief of the Air Staff NAK Browne, Chief of the Army Staff Bikram Singh, NCC Director General PS Bhalla, and the Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit.

Joseph attended Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology (affiliated with Anna University), graduating as the Gold Medalist in Academics in 2020 with a Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) in Computer Science. While at university, he served as a Microsoft Student Partner from 2017 to 2019, notably winning a Machine Learning challenge at the Microsoft Student Partner Summit in 2017. He also founded the university's IO Club, served as Vice President of the Entrepreneurship Cell, and was an active member of the Google Developer Group (GDG).

Career

Zoho Corporation

Joseph began his career at Zoho Corporation in Chennai as a summer intern in 2019, eventually becoming a full-time member of technical staff as a full-stack web developer in July 2020. During his time at Zoho, he worked on Service Desk Plus Cloud (SDP OnDemand), integrating cloud telephony frameworks, Microsoft Endpoint Manager (Intune), and Azure DevOps for internal applications. He also established a strong reputation in application security, notably topping the internal bug bounty report count during his first year at the company by identifying internal security vulnerabilities.[7]

Google

In March 2022, Joseph joined Google as a software engineer at the company's offices in Bengaluru, India.[8] In June 2024, he relocated to Google's offices in London, United Kingdom.

At Google, Joseph initially operated as an Android developer focused on the Google Search app and the Android Privacy Sandbox, where he implemented the platform's enrollment delivery pipeline. For Google Search, he designed and implemented custom UI styling and multi-column support for the recommendation feed on large-form-factor devices, including the Pixel Fold, and led its migration to Google Material 3 (GM3).

He subsequently transitioned to the Core Android Frameworks Team. In this role, Joseph implemented multi-user support for the scoped contacts sharing feature, a major functionality introduced in the release of Android 17.[9] He is an active advocate for cybersecurity awareness and open-source development.

Cybersecurity research

As an independent cybersecurity researcher, Joseph has globally reported over 100 vulnerabilities. He actively participates in vulnerability coordination and bug bounty platforms such as HackerOne under the handle d4rkm4tter.[10]
