Early life

Bawn was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida.[3] In an interview with Adelante Magazine, he said that his interest in film began during childhood and that he later moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to pursue film production more seriously.[3]

Career

Bawn developed the web series Cheetah in August, an independent drama project associated with Black LGBTQ storytelling.[4] In a 2019 interview with VoyageLA, Bawn described his work as focused on original scripted series, films, and documentaries centering ethnic LGBTQIA communities.[4]

In 2021, Bawn and Spencer Michael Collins IV were interviewed by Golden Globes about Velvet Jesus, a drama film co-directed by Bawn and Collins.[2] The article described the project as a collaboration between African American filmmakers and discussed their creation of VIM Media LLC to develop stories from their community.[2]

In 2022, Golden Globes profiled Bawn in connection with Conframa, describing him as a showrunner, creator, producer, director, and actor whose work included As I Am, Velvet Jesus, Trace, and Conframa.[1] In the interview, Bawn discussed the lack of mainstream media representation for queer people of color and his interest in producing stories centered on those communities.[1]

Bawn wrote, directed, and starred in the romantic dramedy Almost Us.[3] Screen Comment reported that the film was set in Phoenix, Arizona, and centered on Black queer love, community survival, class, and urban redevelopment.[5] Out in Jersey covered the film, describing it as a story about a closeted real estate developer and an out community organizer, and identifying Bawn as the film's director.[6]

Personal life

Bawn is married to Brentley Cortell Willis Bawn. In a 2019 interview with VoyageLA, Bawn referred to Brentley as his husband and said the two had been together for more than 12 years and married for five years at the time of the interview.[4]

Bawn's work has frequently addressed Black LGBTQ identity, independent media production, and representation of queer people of color.[1] In interviews, he has discussed the need for more stories centered on ethnic LGBTQ communities and the challenges of producing independent Black queer content.[1][2]
