Alex Foden is a hairdresser best known for his professional association with British singer Amy Winehouse. Foden has been credited with creating or developing the exaggerated beehive hairstyle that became a defining part of Winehouse's visual image during the Back to Black era.[1][2]
Foden worked as Winehouse's hairdresser during the period in which her distinctive Back to Black-era image became internationally recognised. In 2021, The Independent reported that Foden created Winehouse's signature beehive on the video set for her song "Back to Black".[2] Foden recalled that he initially exaggerated the hairstyle as a joke, heavily backcombing Winehouse's hair and adding additional synthetic hair. The oversized version received an enthusiastic response from Winehouse and people on the set and was subsequently developed into her trademark look.[2] Foden described constructing the beehive using packs of lightweight synthetic hair enclosed in hairnets, over which Winehouse's hair could be arranged.[2] Following Winehouse's death in 2011, The Guardian described Foden as "the stylist Alex Foden, who has been credited with creating Winehouse's trademark beehive hairdo".[1] Foden also styled other looks for Winehouse. In January 2008, when Winehouse replaced her dark beehive with a short peroxide-blonde hairstyle, RTÉ reported that the new style was the work of Foden.[3]
Foden knew Winehouse personally as well as professionally. The Independent reported that he had known the singer for five years.[2] After Winehouse's death in July 2011, Foden attended her private funeral in north London. The Guardian listed him among the guests alongside producer Mark Ronson and singer Kelly Osbourne.[1] In later recollections, Foden spoke about the personal support Winehouse had given him during their friendship, as well as his memories of working with her.[2]
Winehouse's beehive became one of the most recognisable aspects of her public image and was influential in fashion and beauty. Vogue reported that fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld used Winehouse's high hair and dramatic eye makeup as inspiration for Chanel's 2007 London pre-fall show. Lagerfeld described Winehouse as a gifted artist and said that he particularly liked her hairstyle, which he had taken as an inspiration for the collection.[4] In 2021, an Irish Examiner feature about the Design Museum exhibition Amy: Beyond the Stage discussed the history of the hairstyle, reporting that Winehouse's towering beehive began when Foden over-backcombed her hair and added an extra packet of hair extensions. The article also noted Winehouse's subsequent influence on Lagerfeld and Chanel.[5]
