Alan Edwards (Born 1955) is an English publicist, serving as Chairman of The Outside Organisation, a London-based public relations agency, which he founded in 1976. Throughout his career Edwards has since represented various clients across genres in the music industry like David Bowie, the Spice Girls, Prince, and The Rolling Stones[1], and David Beckham, Naomi Campbell, and Outernet London outside of music.

Career Personal Life

Edwards was born in 1955 in South London and brought up in Worthing, Sussex. After school, he worked as a music journalist for Sounds and Record Mirror and, whilst reviewing a The Who gig in 1974, Edwards was offered a job by Keith Altham, whose clients included The Who and Marc Bolan. Outside of work with Altham, Edwards began representing punk bands, like The Guildford Stranglers, The Buzzcocks, and The Damned.[2]

Edwards brokered the £1m exlusive deal for Richard Desmond's OK! Magazine to cover the wedding of David & Victoria Beckham.[3]

Personal Life

Edwards is adopted. In 2024 he told The Guardian, "I always knew I was adopted. I had a sister, Mary, and a brother, Tony, and we all looked quite different, so I suppose our adoptive parents, Harrington and Elizabeth had to tell us the truth. They took us all in as babies – each one a year apart – I’m the eldest."[4]

Work with David Bowie

Edwards began working with David Bowie in the early 1980s, and accompanied him on his Serious Moonlight Tour in Australia.

Edwards would go on to work with Bowie for over four decades, and continues working closely with the Bowie Estate.

I Was There

In 2024, Edwards released his first book, 'I Was There: Dispatches from a Life in Rock and Roll' through Simon & Schuster. It received positive reviews with The Guardian saying, "an absorbing read: raw, warm and packed with incident."[5] and Louder than Warsaying, "Alan Edwards provides a fascinating alternative angle on the music scene, chronicling the birth of modern PR with plenty of behind the scenes access to acts he’s worked with over the years."[6]
