The ASync Research Institute, more commonly known as A-Sync or ASync, is a fictional research organization within the Backrooms web series as well as the film, created by Kane Parsons. They are known for discovering the Backrooms in the early 1980's.
ASync is a research organization that is owned by the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, supported by the United States Department of Energy.[citation needed] The company started in 1983, where they used to create MRI machines, but stopped for unknown reasons.[1]
ASync discovered the Backrooms in the late 1980's,[2][3] Tests then began in April 1988 following a press statement from vice director Ivan Beck,[4] where they have since dedicated to mapping out the Backrooms, in which they refer it to as "The Complex".[5]
The Backrooms were referred to as a global solution to end storage and housing issues, but were later changed after an unknown entity, dubbed the Bacteria, was discovered.[6] ASync also sends researchers to explore the Complex for further studies.[7]
The Backrooms was created in January 2022. Creator Kane Parsons expanded the concept into a series shortly after posting the first video. The series establishes plot points such as Async. Various character animations included in these later installments required the utilization of motion capture suits.[2]
In an interview with Michael Dobuski from ABC News in 2022, Parsons described the series as "a slow burn story focusing on both the politics of Async and the United States government, as well as the otherworldly, confusing functions of The Complex, or The Backrooms."[8]
ASync first appears in the web series Backrooms (2022), created by Kane Parsons.[9] Naren Warne, a former researcher, goes missing within the complex following him splitting up with his group within the series.[1] The company also appears within the 2026 film of the same name. They capture Mary, a woman who went to the Backrooms and was being chased, and interrogate her.[10]
