David Steven Simon is an American television writer, producer, screenwriter, playwright, filmmaker, and former film publicist. His television credits include work on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Full House, Mad About You, Sister, Sister, My Two Dads, The Royal Family, and Hearts Afire.[1] Simon co-created The Wayans Bros. and co-created and wrote the comedy-drama series There's... Johnny! with Paul Reiser.[1][2]
Simon was raised in Hollis, Queens, and attended New York's High School of Performing Arts as a drama major.[3] He began his entertainment career in New York as a publicist for United Artists, where he worked on publicity campaigns for films including Rocky, Network, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, films in the James Bond series, Woody Allen films, and Pink Panther films.[3]
In 1981, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Simon and producer Robert Kosberg left Walt Disney Productions after a three-year association to form an independent company, Tam Productions. The article said the split was amicable and reported that Kosberg and Simon still had projects in development at Disney, including I Wish I Were 18 Again and Kids.[4]

Simon worked on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. In 2023, Entertainment Weekly identified him as an executive producer of the series in an article discussing a proposed RuPaul cameo and quoting Simon from Thea Glassman's book Freaks, Gleeks, and Dawson's Creek.[5]
Simon co-created The Wayans Bros., which starred Shawn Wayans and Marlon Wayans.[1] In a 2017 interview with Trainwreck'd Society, Simon discussed the development of the series and his work on The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Mad About You, and There's... Johnny!.[6]
Simon co-created and wrote There's... Johnny! with Paul Reiser. In 2016, Deadline Hollywood reported that Seeso had greenlit the series as an eight-episode scripted comedy set behind the scenes of The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, and that it was written by Reiser and Simon.[7]
The series premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2017. Variety reported that Tony Danza, Ian Nelson, Jane Levy, Paul Reiser, David Steven Simon, and executive producer David Gordon Green appeared after the screening to discuss the series.[8] After Seeso shut down, the completed series was released by Hulu.[9]
The Television Academy described There's... Johnny! as a series created by Reiser and Mad About You producer David Steven Simon, and listed Simon among the executive producers.[2] TV Insider also reported that the series was written by Reiser and Simon and that both served as executive producers with David Gordon Green.[10]
Simon wrote the play Grave Doubts. PA OnStage reported in 2018 that Theatre Harrisburg was debuting the first full production of Grave Doubts, describing the work as a new play by David Steven Simon and noting his television background on series including Sister, Sister, Full House, The Wayans Bros., The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Mad About You.[11]
Simon also wrote My Own Personal Mermaid, a one-woman play described by ProPlay as a work about loss, grief, and renewal in a magical-realist style. ProPlay states that the play was first produced at The Spark Festival in New York City on March 17, 2024.[12]
TV Guide lists Simon as director, writer, and producer of Dante and Beatrice - A Family Film, and lists a story credit for The Wonderful World of Disney and In the Mood under its title The Woo Woo Kid.[1]
